Lawrence Block, the award-winning crime fiction author, is almost as well known for his instructional books for writers, and contributed a monthly column on fiction to Writers Digest for 14 years. WRITING THE NOVEL was his first book for writers, and remained continuously in print since its original appearance in 1978. But the world of publishing has changed in the past 40 years, and Block has now expanded and updated his original text, bringing each chapter up to date and adding welcome new material on the ebook revolution, the phenomenon of self-publishing, and what perils and opportunities await the new novelist-and the veteran as well. Unlike many advice-givers, Block doesn't tell you what book to write, or the one and only way to write it. He holds that every novel is different, and so is every novelist; his aim is to give you the tools to enable you to find your own way. Here are some chapters: #1-Why Write a Novel? #2-Deciding Which Novel to Write. #3-Read...Study...Analyze. #4-Developing Plot Ideas. #5-Developing Characters. #6-Outlining. #7-Using What You Know...and What You Don't Know. #8-Getting Started. #9-Getting It Written. #10-Snag, Dead Ends, and False Trails. #11-Matters of Style. #12-Length. #13-Rewriting. #14-Getting Published. #15-The Case for Self-Publishing. #16-The Case Against Self-publishing. #17-How to Be Your Own Publisher. #18-Doing It Again. #19-Now It's Up to You! WRITING THE NOVEL FROM PLOT TO PRINT TO PIXEL is half again as long as the original version, and Lawrence Block has managed to retain all the 1978 text while bringing it up to date. As he would be the first to tell you, you don't need this book-or any other-to succeed as a novelist. But thousands of writers have found it helpful. And most of us feel we can use all the help we can get.

Counterfactual Thinking Counterfactual Writing

Counterfactuality is currently a hotly debated topic. While for some disciplines such as linguistics, cognitive science, or psychology counterfactual scenarios have been an important object of study for quite a while, counterfactual thinking has in recent years emerged as a method of study for other disciplines, most notably the social sciences. This volume provides an overview of the current definitions and uses of the concept of counterfactuality in philosophy, historiography, political sciences, psychology, linguistics, physics, and literary studies. The individual contributions not only engage the controversies that the deployment of counterfactual thinking as a method still generates, they also highlight the concept’s potential to promote interdisciplinary exchange without neglecting the limitations and pitfalls of such a project. Moreover, the essays from literary studies, which make up about half of the volume, provide both a historical and a systematic perspective on the manifold ways in which counterfactual scenarios can be incorporated into and deployed in literary texts.

The book covers the life of immigrants from the USSR in the U.S., remembers life in Russia, and gradually concentrates on the modus operandi of the KGB, FBI, CIA, NYPD, NSA, ECHELON, Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, Al, and ISI. It covers frontiers of legal theory of surveillance. What distinguishes this book is the intensely personal account of the events and issues.

Linda Hutcheon, in this original study, examines the modes, forms and techniques of narcissistic fiction, that is, fiction which includes within itself some sort of commentary on its own narrative and/or linguistic nature. Her analysis is further extended to discuss the implications of such a development for both the theory of the novel and reading theory. Having placed this phenomenon in its historical context Linda Hutcheon uses the insights of various reader-response theories to explore the “paradox” created by metafiction: the reader is, at the same time, co-creator of the self-reflexive text and distanced from it because of its very self-reflexiveness. She illustrates her analysis through the works of novelists such as Fowles, Barth, Nabokov, Calvino, Borges, Carpentier, and Aquin. For the paperback edition of this important book a preface has been added which examines developments since first publication. Narcissistic Narrative was selected by Choice as one of the outstanding academic books for 1981–1982.

William Gibson, author of the cyberpunk classic, Neuromancer (1984), is one today’s most widely read science fiction writers. This companion is meant both for general readers and for scholars interested in Gibson’s oeuvre. In addition to providing a literary and cultural context for works ranging from Gibson’s first short story, “Fragments of a Hologram Rose” (1977), to his recent, bestselling novel, Zero History (2010), the companion offers commentary on Gibson’s subjects, themes, and approaches. It also surveys existing scholarship on Gibson’s work in an accessible way and provides an extensive bibliography to facilitate further study of William Gibson’s writing, influence, and place in the history of science fiction and in literature as a whole.

Part I interprets the basic political and cultural development in medieval Islam, set in the context of its growth from a religious movement in the Arabian peninsula to an imperial structure extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the borders of China. Part II includes studies of Islamic institutions, philosophy and religion. The close relationship of Islam to Western traditions through the Biblical and Greek heritages is emphasized and the factors which have moulded unique and distinctive institutions are considered.
