A new world has opened to writers who wish to have their words turned into finished books. With technological advances in typesetting, printing, distribution, and sales, self-publishing has become a reality. But while converting your writing into a commercially available title may sound relatively easy--based upon the claims of some companies that offer this service--there are many important considerations you should be aware of before going to press. Publishing expert Dr. Jan Yager has created an easy-to-follow guide that will take you from a book's conception and writing to its production and sales. Whether your work is fiction or nonfiction, How to Self-Publish Your Book offers sound and proven advice at every turn, enabling you to avoid common pitfalls along the way to becoming a self-published author. The book is divided into three parts. Part One takes you through the initial manuscript preparation--setting your goals, writing, sequencing, editing, and proofing, as well as creating a business plan for your book's eventual release. Part Two focuses on the actual production of your book. It explains the importance of cover and interior design, what you need to know about producing physical books and e-books, and how to turn your title into an audiobook. Part Three provides key information on how to market and sell your book--subjects that are crucial to a title's success, but of which most writers have very little understanding. Also included is a valuable resource section that guides you to websites which offer essential information on self-publishing service providers, including complete self-publishing companies as well as freelance editors, proofreaders, printers, distributors, marketers, and publicists. Today, self-publishing workshops and lecturers charge hopeful writers hundreds of dollars, promising to turn their self-published books into bestsellers. The fact is that your book's chance of success starts at its origin, not with the finished product. However you choose to produce your book, whether through a self-publishing company or through separate services, here is a complete road map to what lies ahead--based not on hype or wishful thinking, but on Dr. Jan Yager's lifetime of experience in the world of publishing.

Learn what questions to ask and how to interview people for the significant moments in their life stories, and then write, publish, and bind by hand exquisitely-crafted personal gift books, memoirs, or business success stories. Words in memoirs or life success story gift books have a life of their own. The purpose of a hand-made, finely bound memoirs or business success-story gift book is to show how two or more people bring out the best in one another. You'd be surprised how many people are satisfied to pay up to $10,000 (or more depending upon the publisher) to have only one copy of a hand-bound hardcover book published about their event or life story. What does it take to create and publish a memoirs gift book commemorating a Bar Mitzvah, confirmation, wedding, or true experience? What quality of personal book do you want to make from scratch-writing, printing, and binding? As far as printing and binding, you can make one finished book at a cost to you of only $1.50-$4.50. What you charge a client depends on what it costs you. If you create and publish a custom gift book, you'd publish only one copy of a hand bound, hard-cover book. The tome would contain anywhere from 60 to 100 photos. Text material based on phone or live interviews running at least two hours for one person (or more if needed and about two hours spent per each interview) would be about 80 to 120 published pages-slightly more, but only if necessary. Look at yourself as a designer, writer, interviewer, and book binder. Learn how to make your own pop-up books for all ages.

If You Can Think You Can Write

What do you do, or more precisely, what can you do if you want to write a book and get it published for the first time but don't exactly know how to do it? Needless to say, you can ask those who have done it or you can read up some how-to-write-and-get-published books. Such books are usually quite thick, filled with information, from cover to cover, that are good to know but not necessarily helpful especially at this early stage of your putting-pen-to-paper-and-then-getting-it-published journey right now. Researchers (such as psychologists Paul Slovic and Daniel Kahnema, a Nobel laureate, in their 1974 study) have found that too much information can be counter-productive and deliberating - it leads to what is commonly known as analysis paralysis. This is especially so when the we cannot decide how much information is enough and when enough is enough. Obviously, we can't do without any information at all. But at some point, we need to stop thinking and start doing! Before I got our first book (which I co-authored with my brother) published, I too bought one and borrowed (from the library) a few how-to books on book writing and publishing. Since they were, and still are, very thick, I never did complete any of them. I felt bad for a while. I remember telling myself in the mirror, "Hey Ken, if you can't even finish reading them now, how on earth can you even start and complete writing your own books later on " Eventually, I got fed up of being fed-up. It finally dawned upon me that I did not have to read all of them first before I start writing! Not that there were anything wrong with those books. They were doing perfectly what they're supposed to do - to show readers the A to Z of how to get published! The problem was not with the books. It was me. I was just using them the wrong way. Those books were not meant to be read page by page and chapter by chapter - only to be used as a guide, as a go-to place when one gets stuck. So, I stopped reading them altogether, went straight back to doing what I was supposed to be doing - writing my manuscript until the very end. Trying to read up the entire how-to-write-and-get-published book first before you start writing the first draft of your manuscript can be likened waiting for all the traffic lights ahead of you to turn green before you even start the engine of your car! Once awakened, I never looked back. I didn't go back to those books again. Even if it was just for referencing purposes only. I chose to rely on good old common sense to guide me through. So far it has got me published twice with two different publishers. Unlike what's being suggested in most American-authored how-to-get-published guides, I didn't need an agent to get me any book deals in Malaysia. And I suspect if you approach a small or even medium-sized publisher in America directly, you probably won't need any agents either. I might be wrong, but if you don't try, you will never know. One of my mentors and a dear friend, Mr Tansel Ali, a four-time Australian Memory Champion, TEDx speaker, corporate keynote speaker and celebrity memory coach who had authored two best-selling books with his publisher in Australia, never had to deal with any agents either. This book tells you only the few things that you really need to know - no fluff. The entire writing-and-getting-published process really isn't as difficult as what most people would have made it out to be. The difficulty of writing and publishing is more mental than physical. A comprehensive guide to self-publishing, with 5 essential steps to publish a book the professional way! Industry-expert with 30 years experience gives tips, do's and don'ts on how to prepare, edit, design, proofread your manuscript and upload it to print-on-demand. 5 steps from raw manuscript to published book. Must read for writers of all levels . This book is written for writers: who want to self-publish who want a professionally published book who want a book that makes them proud In this book, the self-publishing process is narrowed down to five steps from raw manuscript to published book. Five steps which are essential basics for self-publishing novices who want to publish professionally and credibly. Information on self-publishing and POD is easily available in print and online--so much so that the process has become confusing and overwhelming for a writer with no previous experience in publishing. Newbie self-publishers are stumped by the terminology, by what the various options entail, and whether they need all that is offered. This book helps to demystify the process. Self-publishing has become the preferred option for writers over the last decade. More recently, it is acknowledged in literary circles as a legitimate form of publishing for serious writers. The caveat to this acceptance is that authors who choose to self-publish must ensure their books meet industry standards in content and design. The onus is on YOU the writer to keep your book PROFESSIONAL--in editorial and design. The adage 'if its worth doing, its worth doing well' should be the cardinal rule in self-publishing. There are too many sub-standard books vying for attention on global bookshelves--don't let yours be one of them! Take ownership and pride in your work. Your content should be accurate, concise, and relevant. Keep it professional! The aim of professional editing is to ensure accuracy and readability. Not everyone who calls themselves an editor has the expertise to do a book edit. Hence, opting for free editing by a non-professional to save money is risky. In self-publishing, the power is always in your hands. You have control over what is edited out and what stays in. Use that power wisely. An experienced proofreader catches mistakes that often escape the editor, designer, and even the writer. Traditionally, a book editor checked editorial content; while a proofreader focused on overall design and page layout. With the advent of electronic- and self-publishing, you will often find both functions being performed by one individual. You need to be careful of conflicting messages from amateur DIM-ers (Did-It-Myself-ers). Ebook conversion software is becoming increasingly user-friendly. It may be worth your time/money to order ebook conversion through your POD service. I use IngramSpark to publish, as I feel it is worthwhile to just click on the 'ebook conversion' button and let them automatically convert the files, do a back-end check, and upload the book directly to their database. POD companies are updating to user-friendly methods all the time. What is available today could be streamlined out of existence tomorrow.
