2010 Stoker Award Winner for Superior Achievement in Nonfiction Explore the world of writing horror from a Bram Stoker and International Horror Guild award-winning author's point of view. Gary Braunbeck uses film, fiction and life experience to elucidate the finer points of storytelling, both in and out of genre. This part-autobiographical, always analytical book looks at how stories develop and what makes them work--or not work--when they're told. Be warned: reality is as brutal as fiction. Rob Zombie, police shootings, William Goldman and human misery are all teachers to the horror neophyte, and Braunbeck uses their lessons to make To Each Their Darkness a whirlwind of horror and hope for the aspiring writer.

To Each Their Own Camino

Away from the crowds, a soft guitar played, filling the darkness as we strolled around the cathedral, soft up-lighting making it even more mystical in the night. We strolled hand-in-hand, arms around waists, like brothers and sisters in ...

There I was, an average middle-aged woman living and working on Canada’s west coast. How, then, did I come to be walking this ancient path, family and friends left behind, and everything I owned in a pack on my back? Exchanging my office pumps for hiking boots and my purse for a backpack, for forty days I followed the Camino de Santiago, a historic pilgrimage of almost eight hundred kilometres across northern Spain. During my journey to Santiago, I experienced climbs and descents that challenged my endurance, ancient towns and historical landmarks that excited my imagination, and endless plains and stretches of solitude that tested my soul. I bent against blinding snow and pummeling winds, endured drenching rains, and basked in brilliant sunshine. My steps led over rocky trails, through whispering forests, among dancing grasslands, and through bustling cosmopolitan cities and crumbling towns. A colourful, international cast of characters strolled through my days, from an irreverent Irishman, to a Polish political prisoner, to a young German couple packing their new baby, to a Tennessee twosome that was walking the world. Their stories were as varied as the landscapes through which we passed. Some sought spiritual renewal, some walked to exercise grief, and some in hope or gratitude for personal miracles. Others just enjoyed walking, seeing a new country, and meeting new people. Each experienced their own Camino in their own way. Ordinary people living ordinary lives, suddenly stepping out on an extraordinary journey, we shared food, wine, and bunk rooms. Through laughter and tears, we broke down barriers of language, religion, and nationality. Strangers became friends, and friends became family, some just for a day or two . . . and some for a lifetime.

The Patristic Understanding of Creation encapsulates what the Church Fathers had to say, in their own words, on the topic of creation. Going back to Roman and Byzantine times, the writings of the Church Fathers are basic to Christian theology and provide a benchmark for how Christians have traditionally understood creation. This understanding of creation, however, faces tremendous challenges in our day, especially in discussions at the intersection of science and religion. Process theology and other efforts to reconceptualize creation have explicitly opposed key elements of the Christian doctrine of creation: creation ex nihilo, the transcendence and immanence of God in creation, “the absolute creatureliness and non-self-sufficiency of the world" (to use a phrase of Fr. Georges Florovsky), the goodness of creation, and the openness of the world to divine action. All of these the Church Fathers not only held but also ably defended. This anthology is therefore not merely of academic or historical interest. In reasserting a theologically sound understanding of creation, this anthology fills a need that is both practical and urgent.

With Looking at the World with Broken Glass in My Eye, Mark Justice has given us a genuine gift; by turns funny, horrifying, heartbreaking, and just plain weird, this is a real showcase collection, and a feast for readers. You never know from one tale to the next what he s going to hit you with, and it s that very unpredictability that makes this book so much more than the mere sum of its often-brilliant parts. Justice has a keen and unflinching eye for the telling details of human (and un-human) behavior, and a poet s economy with words. There is not a wasted syllable to be found between these covers, and at times I felt as if I were being given a writing lesson. I cannot imagine anyone reading powerhouse stories such as Black Wings and the hands-down masterpiece Father s Day without feeling envious that they didn t write them. I expected this collection to be good; I didn t expect it to knock my socks off and leave me so wrung out. This is what short fiction should be but too often isn t. If you don t get this collection, your life is going to be all the poorer for it and I ve never said that about a book before. Gary A. Braunbeck, winner of the Bram Stoker Award and International Horror Guild Award, and author of To Each Their Darkness and A Cracked and Broken Path

"This is a stellar collection of work -- each story is its own character, with its own voice, its own points to make, and its own share of distinctive scares and poignancy. You never feel like you've read this story before, earlier in the collection. Just strap yourself in and let Ty Schwamberger show you what the next generation of dark-fiction writers have in store for the rest of us ... and try to not look over your shoulder afterward." Gary A. Braunbeck, 7-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award and author of IN SILENT GRAVES and TO EACH THEIR DARKNESS Escaping Lucidity is the complete short works of Ty Schwamberger. Within this tome you'll be taken on a terror-filled ride through dark woods, the desert, a graveyard and dark streets, where monsters and strange creatures run amok. The other half of this collection is filled with characters driven to the brink of insanity, coping with the loss of loved ones, spousal abuse and fighting crime on the mean city streets. You'll also find "Author Notes" after each story written by Schwamberger himself giving insight on why he wrote each particular story, interesting facts about characters, the story's setting and where the work first appeared. Are you ready for a mind-bending ride? If not, don't say you weren't warned... 'cause bad things tend to happen when you're trying to escape lucidity. Good Luck!

Billy Fletcher learned to farm the family's tobacco fields--and beat slaves--by the hands of his father. Now, his father is dead, the slaves have long since been freed, and the once-lush fields are dying. Salvation by the name of Abraham knocks on the farmhouse door, bringing wild ideas. He can help Billy Save the plantation and return the fields to their former glory... by raising his father's slaves from the dead. Can the resurrected slaves breathe life back into the Fletcher farm? Having brought the slaves back from graves that his father sent them, can Billy be the kind master his father wasn't? Is keeping the farm worth denying the men the freedom they earned with death? Billy's conscience holds the key to those mysteries, but not the biggest one: what does Abraham really want from the former slave owner's son? Welcome to The Fields. Praise: "The walking dead, a post-Civil-War setting, and a sinister Lincolnesque figure add up to a fresh new take on the zombie mythos." - Tim Waggoner, author of Nekropolis, Broken Shadows and Darkness Wakes "With The Fields, Ty Schwamberger did the near-impossible: made zombies interesting to me again. Not only interesting, but frightening, as well. Throw in more than a dash of scathing social commentary, a pace that never stops to catch its breath, and a sly bit of gallows humor, and you've got a winner. Kick yourself if you miss this one." - Gary A. Braunbeck, Bram Stoker and International Horror Guild Award-winner, author of To Each Their Darkness and A Cracked and Broken Path
