The paperback edition of Star Trek and Twilight Zone writer Jerry Sohl's most beloved novel. Dr. Winfield Costigan had designed his "Needle" as a boon to medical research. But few men are able to let well enough alone, and when the Inland Electronics Company puts up a huge sum to finance the project, Costigan constructs a needle big enough to allow a man to step inside. At a secret testing, Glenn Basher of Inland Electronics draws the short straw and passes through the eye of the needle. Trouble is, he does not reappear. Naturally, the police begin to show interest in the case of the missing man. Interference by the press and finally the meddling of a fanatic bring things to a most eerie climax on "the other side" of the needle. This is science fiction of a most entertaining variety-a fantastic adventure in time, but peopled with fully developed characters in situations that allow them to react in a most human way. "Jerry Sohl undoubtedly possesses one of the most imaginative minds of our day." -Houston Post

(FAQ). The Twilight Zone is among the most beloved shows in American television history, a pioneering fantasy behemoth that bridged the cultural gap between the 1950s and 1960s with thought-provoking mystery, mind-boggling theorems, and occasionally outright horror. The Twilight Zone FAQ takes the reader back to that halcyon era, looking back on the show and its impact as a force for societal change, via reflections on the manifold topics and controversies that the show took on from the space race to the Red Menace, from paranoia to madness and beyond. Dave Thompson traces the history of the show from its earliest flowering in the mind of then-unknown Rod Serling through its slow birth, shaky beginning, and breathless five-season run and he shows how it became the blueprint for so much of the fantasy television that has followed. Chapters deal with the comic books, novels, and many other spin-offs, including the movie, the TV revamps, and even the amusement park ride. In addition, this FAQ offers a full guide to every episode, providing details on the cast and music and pinpointing both the best and the worst of the series, all adding up to a brightly opinionated time machine that catapults the reader back to the true golden age of American television.

It was too nightmarish to be real... All of them, the whole town, wordlessly climbing into trucks in the middle of the night and going off-where? And now, his own wife had joined them, and she seemed not to hear when he screamed his pleas for her to come back. None of them heard. It had to be a dream. He closed his eyes. I'm in bed. In a moment I will wake up and Marjorie will be beside me. It didn't work. He was alone. Alone in a ghost town. And even if he could find anyone to tell, they would think he was crazy. THE MASTER PLANNERS-AND THE SCHEME THAT COULD CHANGE THE SHAPE OF HUMAN EXISTENCE Far beyond the searching eye of any creature, in the darkness and emptiness of space itself, the ship dispatched a capsule. No sooner had it effected this than it vanished among the stars, lost in the outer reaches. Then suddenly the capsule exploded without a sound, without a flash, and a billion captive motes, suddenly free, spread over vast distances in the upper air. Some floated aimlessly; others drifted toward Earth. But the planners knew this would happen. Some, they knew, would survive this day. Few would survive many days. None would survive more than a week-unless... Trlk, the Sybillian, should be thanked for the whole thing, I suppose, though it would be a grudging thank-you I'd give him, considering all the trouble he caused. Still. . . . I first saw him on a July morning at the beginning of the vacation schedule, when four of us on the local side were trying to do five people's work. My first inkling anything was wrong came when I returned from the courthouse beat and stuck a sheet of paper in the typewriter to write the probate court notes. I struck the keys. They wouldn't go all the way down. I opened the cover plate, looked in to see what was wrong. I saw nothing. "Hey " I said. "I know you're down there. What's the big idea?" Trlk squeezed his head up from the levers. "Listen, will you get out of there? I've got work to do " He wouldn't, though. Eventually I gave up. So began a strange collaboration, with Trlk perched on my shoulder dictating stories into my ear while I typed them. He had definite ideas about writing and I let him have his way. After all, I didn't know anything about literature.
