This is the only critical edition available of two of the most popular modern classics in English literature. Three Men in a Boat describes a comic expedition by middle-class Victorians up the Thames to Oxford, and provides brilliant snap-shots of London's playground in the late 1880s. Three Men on the Bummel records a similar escapade some ten years later, when the trio cycle through the Black Forest, at the height of the new bicycling craze.

YOU enter the village of Gantick between two round-houses set one on each side of the high road where it dips steeply towards the valley bottom. On the west of the opposite hill the road passes out between another pair of round-houses. And down in the heart of the village among the elms facing the churchyard lych-gate stands a fifth, alone. The five, therefore, form an elongated St. Andrew’s cross; but nobody can tell for certain who built them, or why. They are all alike; each built of cob, circular, whitewashed, having pointed windows and a conical roof of thatch with a wooden cross on the apex. When I was a boy these thatched roofs used to be pointed out to me as masterpieces; and they still endure. But the race of skilled thatchers, once the peculiar pride of Gantick, has come to an end. What time has eaten modern and clumsy hands have tried to repair; yet a glance will tell you that the old sound work means to outwear the patches. The last of these famous thatchers lived in the round-house on your right as you leave Gantick by the seaward road. His name was old Nat Ellery, or Thatcher Ellery, and his age (as I remember him) between seventy or eighty. Yet he clung to his work, being one of those lean men upon whom age, exposure, and even drink take a long while to tell. For he drank; not socially at the Ring of Bells, but at home in solitude with a black bottle at his elbow. He lived there alone; his neighbours, even of the round-house across the road, shunned him and were shunned by him: children would run rather than meet him on the road as he came along, striding swiftly for his age (the drink never affected his legs), ready greaved and sometimes gauntleted as if in haste for his job, always muttering to himself; and when he passed us with just a side-glance from his red eyes, we observed that his pale face did not cease to twitch nor his lips to work. We felt something like awe for the courage of Archie Passmore, who followed twenty paces behind with his tools and a bundle of spars or straw-rope, or perhaps at the end of a ladder which the two carried between them. Archie (aged sixteen) used to boast to us that he did not fear the old man a ha’penny; and the old man treated Archie as a Gibeonite, a hewer of wood, a drawer of water, never as an apprentice. Of his craft, except what he picked up by watching, the lad learned nothing.

They sought out the strange. They investigated the inexplicable. They had one hell of a hangover. On an odyssey of oddities that would take them all to the very limits of their imagination (and inebriation), bestselling author Nick Redfern teamed up with professional monster-hunters Jonathan Downes and Richard Freeman. For six weeks in the summer of 2001, the intrepid-yet-hard-partying trio rampaged across the remote wilds of Great Britain in hot pursuit of werewolves, lake monsters, giant cats, ghostly devil dogs, and ape-men. Their adventures led them deep into ancient forests, into the dark corridors of a mansion hiding a wild man, and to the shores of the legendary Loch Ness -- along the way encountering all manner of curious characters, including witches, government agents, and eyewitnesses who claim to have seen monsters firsthand. And only at journey's end did the hard questions posed at the start of their quest begin to reveal some mind-bending answers. That monsters truly do exist in our world. And that we are responsible for their existence! Whether you're seeking a glimpse into the bizarre reaches of reality, or just looking for a good time, Three Men Seeking Monsters is a uniquely gonzo trek with a trio of adventurers who pushed themselves to the edge -- and went right over it.

THREE MEN DANCING By DAVID LYNN WINDMON In everything humans do in life the family is the basis for true individual success. Strong family ties, and as is the case in this family a strong and steady maternal presence is the way to family social power. Regardless to sameness of togetherness, the lives of this family are also unfortunately paved with the bones of chance and error. Through the true love and respect of one another, and the togetherness unconditional that love brings, the power manifests itself in the lives of Paul and Amy Jackson. It is also wrung from the source, for the enrichment of the lives of their children, grandchildren, and extended community family. It is said often that it takes a village to raise a child, and in the village the Jackson family lived in (San Francisco, Ca.) many wonderful children stand up to be counted. This is the story of an American Family. Not the average family, but not far from it. It is not my family for sure, maybe not yours either. But in every way this is a family, all the good things and tragic ones along the way included. One familiar, like lots of others, with stratospheric highs, coupled with the sting of harsh, bitter lowness. The four men in the first few lines of the story between them represent the fullness of the life for and within the family Jackson. The story begins on the unforgiving streets of New Orleans Louisiana, with two children who meet inadvertently, quite by accident. They are both in separate children’s orphanages as such, and it is just because of the willingness of Paul to work for little money one day that makes that meeting happen. Through the years his willingness to work, both above and below the law makes lots of things come their way. Through his willingness to bend the rules she is spared the last few years of unfulfilled wait kids have in an orphanage. Paul and Amy, both are grandchildren of freed slaves from homes broken by tragedy or tragedy of circumstance. They decide together early on they want to rear a large, loving family. They would for the rest of their lives hold on to the things they used for survival and that made those early years in children’s homes feel safe for them. Paul learns fast that a steady willingness to bend the rules holds gallant if risky reward. Amy spends little time with her prostitute mother. But in that time she gets indoctrinated to a voodoo priestess, learning that things unexplained drives forever her life and choices. Moving to San Francisco in 1932 deep depression era America proves a godsend, as they are able to forge a positive, productive life. Eventually they groom ten children to take on all the world has to offer, some with a level of worldly success matched by few. That steady flow of children and with that the bond only a family has gives those children the space within themselves to be the very best they can be. Unfortunately though, space also allows those that want to be, at times far less than their best, through lapses or intent, be that as it may. There is tragedy born flush of such lapses of mind and body; that delicate ballet of the two that separates one’s best from one’s worst. There is in the lives of the Jackson family tragedy, based on the randomness of another delicate ballet, that of time, space, and opportunity. One of the bright lights of the loins of Paul and Amy didn’t make it to the completeness of life that comes with age and wisdom. He was struck down as just a child, and that tragedy only bonded the family, and fused them to the community. That made them all into the massive family so many of them if unknowingly, needed. Another beloved sibling chose the destructive path and abject loneliness of drug abuse, and never made it out of the turbulent 1960’s. The children of Paul and Amy also scale the heights of career fields that include Law, Medicine, Music, and professional sports. Subsequent generations have also achieved those and show

Paulding has successfully employed his style as a dagger to elucidate his chosen subjects. This literary work of art is his most triumphant production. Magnificent!

More people today can name the members of the Three Stooges than can name three justices of the Supreme Court. The Stooges are comedy icons whose enduring appeal and slapstick legacy have made them one of the most famous and beloved comedy troupes in the world. Michael Fleming's The Three StoogesTM is the first complete, authorized biography of the men who made pie fights part of our national cultural heritage. A juggernaut of wise guys, headlocks, and unforgettable insults, this book tells the whole history of the Stooges, starting with their origins in the golden years of vaudeville, when the boys from Brooklyn honed their craft. Moe, Curly, and Shemp Howard were born Moses, Jerome, and Samuel Horwitz--and were believed for many years to be the three least accomplished sons of their Lithuanian immigrant parents. Ultimately, of course, the Three Stooges reinvented the rules of slapstick comedy: never be caught unprepared in a pie fight, never slap one wise guy in the face if you can slap three in a row, and never underestimate the value of a good poke in the eye. Signed in 1934 by Columbia Pictures to a renewable contract that had them making at least nine short films a year, the Stooges learned firsthand about the sharks swimming through Hollywood's early waters. And after nearly a quarter century of producing the short films for which the Stooges are so well known and loved, the studio declined to renew their contract in 1954, and the pioneering pie-throwing professionals lost their jobs. Fittingly, though, Moe & Co. were destined to have the last laugh: the advent of television revived their careers after the decline of vaudeville and Hollywood shorts, and a new generation of belly laughs was born. From the Stooges' humble origins to movie stardom to comedy legends, there's something here for every level of fan--from folks who watched them on television as a kid to Stooge scholars and certified "knuckleheads." Featuring over two hundred photographs, many of them rare; interviews with Stooge friends and families; and a complete filmography with every "woob-woob" and crashed society cocktail party lovingly detailed, this book will be treasured by all Stoogedom.

This book examines the relationship of three very different men who are usually seen as the most important composers of the so-called Second Viennese School – Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern – in the years 1906 to 1921 through a close reading of their correspondence with each other. To date only one of these correspondences, that of Schönberg and Berg, has been published, so the other two sets of letters are not yet widely known. The largely differing personalities of these three men come out clearly in their letters to each other: Schönberg, the master who demands a great many things from his two pupils (long after they have ceased to be that); Berg, from whom he demands the most; and Webern, his most pious devotee. The book covers the period linking the first correspondence between master and pupils in 1906 and the dissolution of the Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen in 1921, the period when these men were most closely bound together.

While scores of books have been published about the atomic bombings that helped end World War II, little has been written about the personal lives and relationship of the three men that led the raid. Paul Tibbets, Tom Ferebee, and Ted “Dutch” Van Kirk exemplified what Life Magazine meant when in 1942 it called the B-17 pilot, bombardier, and navigator “the three musketeers of the Army Air Forces.” A former navigator-bombardier and pilot himself, Harder brings a fresh perspective to an otherwise well-known narrative. He provides a rare insider’s look at exactly who these three fellows were, how they were trained, what they meant to each other, and finally how everything coalesced into the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attacks.
