Crime Scene Asia is a casebook written by award winning Australian Author Liz Porter of fascinating true stories throughout Asia. Its opening case begins when the body of a woman is found in a Singapore nature park. Nobody has reported her missing. Nobody knows who she is. The only clue to her identity is a set of tiny numbers etched into a series of implants in her teeth. Police door-knock the dentists of Singapore until they find the one who treated her. Then, following a trail of numbers called from her phone, they unmask her killer. In another case, set 300 kms away, in Kuala Lumpur, a married man is arrested for the murder of his mistress. Police are adamant that he is her killer. But the man’s lawyer can point to forensic evidence that tells a different story altogether. Meanwhile one of the book’s Hong Kong cases tells the story of a humble truck driver facing jail for his apparent involvement in a bombing plot allegedly masterminded by two of the former British colony’s most notorious gangsters. Then the evidence of a forensic scientist sets him free.

The CSI Effect: Television, Crime, and Governance demonstrates that CSI's appeal cannot be disentangled from its production as a televisual text or the broader discourses and practices that circulate within our social landscape. This groundbreaking interdisciplinary collection bridges the gap between the study of popular culture media and the study of crime, and fosters the development of a new set of theoretical languages in which the mediated spectacle of crime and criminalization can be carefully considered.

This book introduces the sources and historic collection campaigns of resource allocation in wireless communication systems. The unique characteristics of MIMO-OFDMA systems are thoroughly studied and summarized. Remarks on resource allocation and spectrum sharing are also presented, which demonstrate the great value of resource allocation techniques, but also introduce distinct challenges of resource allocation in MIMO-OFDMA systems. Novel resource allocation techniques for OFDMA Systems are surveyed from various applications (e.g., for unicast, or multicast with Guaranteed BER and Rate, subcarrier and power allocation with various detectors, low-complexity energyefficient resource allocation, etc.) in this book. Due to the high mobility and low latency requirements of 5G wireless communications, this book discusses how to deal with the imperfect CSI. It also discusses how to deal with e.g., throughput maximization, outage probabilities maximization and guarantee, energy efficiency, physical-layer security issues with feedback channel capacity constraints, in order to characterize and understand the applications of practical scenes. This book will target professionals & researchers working in the fields of Wireless Communications and Networking, Resource Allocation and Transmissions. Advanced-level students in electrical engineering and computer science will also find this book useful as a secondary textbook.

This interdisciplinary study examines how state surveillance has preoccupied British and American television series in the twenty years since 9/11. Surveillance and Terror in Post-9/11 British and American Television illuminates how the U.S. and U.K., bound by an historical, cultural, and television partnership, have broadcast numerous programs centred on three state surveillance apparatuses tasked with protecting us from terrorism and criminal activity: the prison, the police, and the national intelligence agency. Drawing from a range of case studies, such as Sherlock, Orange is the New Black and The Night Manager, this book discusses how television allows viewers, writers, and producers to articulate fears about an increased erosion of privacy and civil liberties following 9/11, while simultaneously expressing a desire for a preventative mechanism that can stop such events occurring in the future. However, these concerns and desires are not new; encompassing surveillance narratives both past and present, this book demonstrates how television today builds on earlier narratives about panoptic power to construct our present understanding of government surveillance.

The book is an edited volume of carefully selected articles by eminent scholars focusing on the specialist knowledge transmission through genre variation, particularly on the issues of standardization and hybridity. The main focus was to analyse discursive popularization in the contexts and domains of natural sciences, law, and commerce, viewed in a diachronic perspective. The scholars involved have concentrated their studies on the creative transformation, hybridization, and even bending of genres used to popularise scientific, legal and commercial discourse for different communicative purposes and audiences, thus extending the conventional genre boundaries to disseminate specialized knowledge. The proliferation of specialized knowledge has indeed created a growing need to convey expert knowledge to a variety of addressees, with different levels of shared understanding and expertise. Such disciplinary knowledge can only be conveyed through various subtle manipulations of generic conventions keeping in mind the aims, the users, the media, the social contexts, and the domain with which specific knowledge is associated.

This book exposes the dangerously imperfect forensic evidence that we rely on for criminal convictions. "That's not my fingerprint, your honor," said the defendant, after FBI experts reported a "100-percent identification." They were wrong. It is shocking how often they are. Autopsy of a Crime Lab is the first book to catalog the sources of error and the faulty science behind a range of well-known forensic evidence, from fingerprints and firearms to forensic algorithms. In this devastating forensic takedown, noted legal expert Brandon L. Garrett poses the questions that should be asked in courtrooms every day: Where are the studies that validate the basic premises of widely accepted techniques such as fingerprinting? How can experts testify with 100 percent certainty about a fingerprint, when there is no such thing as a 100 percent match? Where is the quality control in the laboratories and at the crime scenes? Should we so readily adopt powerful new technologies like facial recognition software and rapid DNA machines? And why have judges been so reluctant to consider the weaknesses of so many long-accepted methods? Taking us into the lives of the wrongfully convicted or nearly convicted, into crime labs rocked by scandal, and onto the front lines of promising reform efforts driven by professionals and researchers alike, Autopsy of a Crime Lab illustrates the persistence and perniciousness of shaky science and its well-meaning practitioners.

Not every crime scene is a homicide... There are things to learn and humor to be found in a great many aspects of police and crime scene work. In short, life on the streets is oftentimes interesting and sometimes downright comical. This series is a compilation of stories gleaned from my years of serving and protecting the citizens of a moderate sized, mid-western city. The basic facts are true, although the names of those involved have been changed, not necessarily to protect any innocence, but rather to hopefully reduce any liability on my part. Unlike television, not every case is over in 52 minutes and not every crime is solvable. Not all evidence is perfect. The evidence is also not always as exciting, as shocking, or as damning as the evidence shown on television. Yes, I have seen fingerprints removed from feathers, DNA extracted from lip balm, and fracture evidence matched back to specific items which have sealed a conviction for those accused of wrongdoing. However, more prevalent are the number of cases which had little or no evidence, or which had little if any follow-up investigation due to there simply not being enough resources (time, money, personnel) to allocate to determining what really happened and who was to blame. While television may show what the forensic potential of evidence may be, and how cutting edge technology is assisting in the fight against crime, not every (in fact, few if any) departments, agencies, or labs have access to the types of technology which is often featured in evening forensic dramas. More oftentimes than not, cases are still solved through rudimentary investigative techniques, gut feelings, and basic evidence collection. While not always as sexy and plot twisting as on television, real life can prove to be quite interesting and somewhat entertaining. Welcome to crime scene investigation in the real world. Buckle up, because it's anything but like television...

The terms forensic investigator and forensic investigation are part of our cultural identity. They can be found in the news, on television, and in film. They are invoked, generally, to imply that highly trained personnel will be collecting some form of physical evidence with eventual scientific results that cannot be questioned or bargained with. In other words, they are invoked to imply the reliability, certainty, and authority of a scientific inquiry. Using cases from the authors’ extensive files, Forensic Investigations: An Introduction provides an overview of major subjects related to forensic inquiry and evidence examination. It will prepare Criminal Justice and Criminology students in forensic programs for more specialized courses and provide a valuable resource to newly employed forensic practitioners. Written by practicing and testifying forensic professionals from law enforcement, academia, mental health and the forensic sciences, this work offers a balanced scientific approach, based on the established literature, for broad appeal. The purpose of this book is to help students and professionals rid themselves of the myths and misconceptions they have accumulated regarding forensic investigators and the subsequent forensic investigations they help to conduct. It will help the reader understand the role of the forensic investigator; the nature and variety of forensic investigations that take place in the justice system; and the mechanisms by which such investigations become worthy as evidence in court. Its goals are no loftier than that. However, they could not be more necessary to our understanding of what justice is, how it is most reliably achieved, and how it can be corrupted by those who are burdened with apathy and alternative motives. A primary text for instructors teaching forensic courses related to criminal and forensic investigation Written by forensic professionals, currently in practice and testifying in court Offers applied protocols for a broad range of forensic investigations Augments theoretical constructs with recent, and relevant case studies and forensic reports Based on the most recent scientific research, practice, and protocols related to forensic inquiry
