Textbook of Peripheral Neuropathy is a practical but complete reference for neurologists in general practice who are evaluating patients with peripheral neuropathy. The book covers a broad range of neuropathies including mononeuropathy, mononeuritis multiplex, and polyneuropathy (which accounts for the greatest number of cases) and provides an evidence-based approach to testing, diagnosis, and treatment. The chapters are written by internationally renowned expert contributors with deep clinical experience and contain numerous tables, figures, and algorithms for quick access to key information. The book covers both inherited and acquired diseases, including neuropathies arising from physical injury, diabetes, alcoholism, toxins, autoimmune responses, nutritional deficiencies, vascular and metabolic disorders, medication-induced neuropathies, and idiopathic conditions.

There are many myths when it comes to successful treatments for Peripheral Neuropathy; in fact, most patients are not aware that there are over 100 different forms of neuropathy; and, just as many reasons for its development. Unfortunately, other than Alcohol/Drug related neuropathy or Traumatic injury neuropathy, most neuropathies are incurable! But, that doesn't mean that there are no treatments for the pain, numbness, burning, tingling, edema and cramping which many neuropathies hold. This book covers many of the so-called "myths" that so many patients are willing to try, as well as actual treatments, both electronic and nutritional, which actual work to reduce symptoms; and, is put together by the nation's first, certified Neuropathist, James Skaug.

Part of the Oxford Textbooks in Clinical Neurology series, the Oxford Textbook of Neuromuscular Disorders covers the scientific basis, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of neuromuscular disorders with a particular focus on the most clinically relevant disorders. The book is organized into seven sections, starting with the general approach to the patient with neuromuscular disorders and then focusing on specific neuromuscular conditions affecting the peripheral nervous system from its origins at the spinal cord anterior horn on its outward course to their effector muscles and the inbound sensory pathways. Chapters on specific neuromuscular conditions are illustrated with typical case histories and their presenting features, allowing readers to put rarer conditions into their clinical context more easily. The concurrent online version allows access to the full content of the textbook, contains links from the references to primary research journal articles, allows full text searches, and provides access to figures and tables that can be downloaded to PowerPointRG. This textbook will serve as a useful reference for neurologists and specialist trainees in neurology, neuroscientists, neurophysiologists, and other healthcare professionals.

Plasma cell dyscrasias are common causes of peripheral neuropathy. Peri pheral neuropathy may be the first manifestation of multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, or monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). Peripheral neuropathy occurs in more than one-half of patients with osteosclerotic myeloma. The hematologic disorders are such an important association with peripheral polyneuropathy that, for the last decade, we have obtained a metastatic bone survey and immunoelectrophoresis of serum and a 24-hour urine specimen on all patients older than 40 years with undiagnosed peripheral neuropathy. This textbook on polyneuropathies and plasma cell dyscrasia is welcome, because the subject is of considerable medical importance and because the authors are expert in these disorders. Kelly's studies have shown that a systematic search for monoclonal proteins in plasma and urine among patients with neuropathy of unknown cause increases diagnostic yield. Latov's studies have focused on the role of myelin associated glycoproteins (MAG) in the induction of neuropathy. Kyle, director of the Special Protein Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, brings a broad clinical and laboratory perspective and experi ence. The timing of the textbook is just right, because there is much new information which needs to be summarized.

Disorders of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) are the cause of prominent neurological symptoms including weakness, sensory loss, pain and autonomic dysfunction associated with deficits, morbidity and mortality. These disorders may be primary hereditary or cryptogenic neurologic disorders confined to the PNS or part of the pathology of both the central nervous system and the PNS. Most PNS disorders are secondary to other system disorders and may be responsive to treatment of the primary disease. Important advances have been obtained in several areas including molecular genetics, biochemistry, immunology, morphology and physiology that have enhanced our understanding of the causes and consequences of damage to peripheral nerve. Understanding of both these groups of PNS diseases has greatly expanded over recent years and has led to important advances of treatment both to protect and to repair damages of peripheral nerve. This volume provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of examination, diagnosis and treatment of these very diverse disorders and will be of interest to both the research and clinical neuroscience and neurology communities. Covers both hereditary and cryptogenic neurologic disorders Includes advances in the basic science of PNS from molecular genetics, biochemistry, immunology, morphology and physiology Detailed coverage of neuropathy in connective tissue disorders, infectious disorders, metabolic disorders and malignancy
