Tartuffe

Tartuffe is only incidentally satiric ; what we experience in reading or seeing it , as
several modern critics have argued , is not a satire but a “ deep ” comedy in
which ( 1 ) a knave tries to control life by cold chicanery , ( 2 ) a fool tries to

Richard Wilbur's verse translation of Tartuffe has been acclaimed as a masterpiece in its own right. Set in rhymed couplets, it captures not only the tone of the original but the dramatic energy as well. Not surprisingly, the play in this translation has been performed regularly over the years. One of Moliere's most popular plays, Tartuffe, written in 1669, tells the story of Orgon, a rich bourgeois who has become a prude and bigot in his middle age. He is the perfect mark for Tartuffe, a wily opportunist and swindler, who ingratiates himself with Orgon by affecting an air of piety. Soon the gulled Orgon not only hands over his fortune but offers his daughter in marriage to Tartuffe. But Orgon discovers his "spiritual" master's true nature in a most shocking and hilarious fashion.

Tartuffe

TARTUFFE . It has occurred to me , but you are too understanding . ( He moves
behind her to take her in his arms . ) If I need forgiveness for loving you , you will
forgive . ( ELMIRE turns to face TARTUFFE and he hurriedly puts his arms down .
) ...

A new sparkling and witty version by Roger McGough of Moli?re's comedy published as a programme text to accompany the premiere at the Liverpool Everyman on 9 May 2008. Tartuffe is a beacon of piety and in the home of wealthy merchant Orgon he has his feet firmly under the table. But all is not as it seems and as Orgon becomes more enraptured with his new companion the whole city is chattering. Is he a friend, a fraud, a miracle or a hypocrite? The family smell a rat and amidst the frills and frivolity of seventeenth century society they hatch a cunning plan to outwit the wily deceiver before he brings their house crashing down. Moli?re wrote Tartuffe in 1664 but the play was banned following its first production in Paris; it wasn't until 1669 that it was revived and became one of his greatest successes.

Molieres 'Tartuffe' is one of the most popular plays of Europe - not without reason, because it is a pleasure of the special kind to see unmasked hypocrites - religious in particular. As is the case in Europe, a lack of appropriate study objects also never existed in India. The adaptation of the piece by P.K. Atre (a well-known author of the Indian Federal State Maharashtra) from the year 1963 therefore fits well into the tradition of critical texts and popular jokes since the Indian Middle Ages. The South Asiatic version of Tartuffe is delightful for Western readers for different reasons: Tartuffe's Indian counterpart is a Guru, i.e. he belongs to a species, which can be found also in Europe in the meantime. With great skills the author has adapted the French scenario of the 17th Century into the India of the 20th Century naturally with some characteristic changes. These concern partly social and religious conditions, of which even some of the most patriarchal do not remain exempted from Atres jokes. In order to facilitate the entrance into the Hindu world for western readers, the translation is accompanied by detailed notes and an introduction. For those, who want to improve their knowledge of the Marahi (the language Maharashtras), the volume contains additionally the original of the piece.
