Since its explosive premiere in Rome in 1921, Six Characters in Search of an Author has gained worldwide recognition. Pirandello's challenge to the very notion of stage representation was taken up by the leading directors of the time. The playwright incorporated details from the early performances into his revised text, which he directed himself in 1925. Jennifer Lorch examines the two texts in the context of different theatrical traditions and traces Pirandello's growing awareness of the development of advanced theatrical facilities outside Italy. She also offers an analysis of selected productions of the play in Italy, England, France, the USA, Germany and Russia in both commercial and avant-garde theatres. This comprehensive study includes a production chronology, bibliography and illustrations from major productions.

This selection of plays by Luigi Pirandello contains some of his best-known works, such as Six Characters in Search of an Author – an absurdist piece in which the characters, actors and Pirandello himself interact during the rehearsal of a fictional play within the play – and Henry IV – a tragicomic tale of a man who falls from a horse and believes himself to be the eponymous Holy Roman Emperor. Preoccupied with the nature of truth and delusion, and treading dangerously on the borderline between sanity and madness, Pirandello's plays are a daring exploration of human actions and the dark motives lying behind them, and the culmination of the naturalistic school of theatre inaugurated by authors such as Ibsen and Chekhov.

Blurring the border between fiction and life, between the stage and the world outside, Six Characters in search of an Author exploded onto the stage in 1921 as one of the unique achievements of twentieth-century drama. Updated and recontextualised in this vertiginous new version by Rupert Goold and Ben Power, it becomes a dark parable for a media-obsessed age and an exhilarating exploration of how we define art, ourselves and 'reality' in the twenty-first century. This version premiered in 2008 at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester, in a co-production with Headlong Theatre, directed by Rupert Goold.

Luigi Pirandello (28 June 1867 - 10 December 1936) was an Italian dramatist, novelist, poet, and short story writer whose greatest contributions were his plays. He was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his almost magical power to turn psychological analysis into good theatre." Pirandello's works include novels, hundreds of short stories, and about 40 plays, some of which are written in Sicilian. Pirandello's tragic farces are often seen as forerunners of the Theatre of the Absurd. In 1893, he wrote his first important work Marta Ajala, which was published in 1901 with the title L'Esclusa. In 1894, he published his first collection of short stories, Amori Senza Amore.

Six Characters in Search of an Author (Italian: Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore is an Italian play by Luigi Pirandello, written and first performed in 1921. An absurdist metatheatrical play about the relationship among authors, their characters, and theatre practitioners, it premiered at the Teatro Valle in Rome to a mixed reception, with shouts from the audience of "Manicomio!" ("Madhouse!") and "Incommensurabile!" ("Incommensurable!"), a reaction to the play's illogical progression. Reception improved at subsequent performances, especially after Pirandello provided for the play's third edition, published in 1925, a foreword clarifying its structure and ideas.

The third volume of Luigi Pirandello's collected plays contains major work, but The Rules of the Game is by far the best known. First performed in 1918, the action of the play does not all take place on the surface; situations are suddenly reversed when the mind of the deceived husband becomes clear to the audience. This biting comedy verging on farce also contains a tragic moral. Each in his own Way (1924) is a variation on Six Characters in Search of an Author, Pirandello's best known play. The interplay between the characters and their stage representations surprises and involves the audience in the nature of reality. Grafted (1917) is more conventional on the surface but hides a cunning metaphor based on the principle of the graft of a garden plant. The Other Son (1923) digs deep into the reality of peasant life in Sicily. A young doctor unearths a horrifying story in his attempt to understand why a poverty-stricken old woman writes to her far-away sons for help while ignoring another son who lives in the same village.

What could be more improbable than an author who joins his own characters in the story he is writing? It's as if he comes from a land where nobody suits him anymore. He craves literary revenge against a world full of unsympathetic publishers and out-of-order readers, and he takes on the prospect of melding himself from the reality of creative thought into his own fiction. He seems to think the perfect novel is one in which he can just go away and live in. The present crowds around him. Eventually, he escapes to search for and join in with his personnages predestined to give up his authority over them in order to enliven the mix of his people. To add to the mosaic, his characters are all 'addicted' to a strange disease common to writers: scripturgia, the urgent need to be writing all the time and are assembled at a meeting of the other AA: Authors Addicted.
