Judaism, Christianity and Islam all impose obligations and constraints upon the rightful use of wealth and earthly resources. All three of these religions have well-researched views on the acceptability of practices such as usury but the principles and practices of other, non-interest, financial instruments are less well known. This book examines each of these three major world faiths, considering their teachings, social precepts and economic frameworks, which are set out as a guide for the financial dealings and economic behaviour of their adherents.

Mirroring the expansion of wealth in the Middle East and Asia and a surge in Islamic self-identity, Islamic banking practices have either become the law of the land or coexist and compete with Western practices in at least six countries. A growing number of institutions and mutual funds (akin to Western ''socially responsible'' funds) have established Islamic investment and other practices to cater to this burgeoning market. Because of its prevalence, practitioners in every banking-related area must familiarize themselves with current Islamic finance practices in order to do business with Muslim clients and to engage in cross-border financing. Injunctions from the "Qur'an and the sayings of Prophet Muhammed have generated a web of interrelated norms which prohibit Islamic financiers from engaging in transactions that involve interest "(riba) and speculation "(gharar). "Islamic Law and Finance describes the dynamic set of Islamically-sanctioned ways financiers can transacat business.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - History, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim (Fakultat der Rechtswissenschaften und VWL), language: English, abstract: Since the mid-1970s, an industry growing at considerable pace in the Islamic world is gaining market shares all over the world in countries with sufficient Muslim populations. This "Islamic Finance" industry claims to act in line with the ethical and practical principles set forth in the Qu'ran and the Shari'ah, thus appealing to Muslim and non-Muslim clients alike who search for viable alternatives to conventional financial products. As explained, the first beginnings of this phenomenon can be traced well back into the 1970s when the first "Islamic Banks" started operating in Egypt and Jordan. In the past decades, a vast amount of research has been published - empirical and theoretical - to review the impacts of Islamic Finance on the financial markets of the Islamic world. These works, to a great deal inspired by the enormous need of the industry for quantitative and qualitative research, all dealt with questions of comparative efficiency of conventional and Islamic Finance, the demand for Shari'ah-compliant financial products, the actual genuineness, or authenticity, of the industry, etc. However, only a very small portion of these research works dealt with the question whether or not the Islamic world actually needs Islamic Finance. At first, this might seem as a trivial question (if there was no need for Islamic Finance, there would not have been this substantial growth). But at second thought, one realizes the associations that come which come with the question of raison d'etre: Why did Islamic Finance emerge? Does it add an economic value to its markets? And most importantly, is it - so far - successfully reaching its goals? To my understanding, the works that deal with this big-picture analysis, are thin on the ground. Therefore, this work shall take a first step at putting Isl"

This book contains papers from the International Law Association panel on "Islamic Finance and the Influence of Religion on the Law." First, the concept of Islamic finance is introduced to foster a better understanding of Shar'ia compliant financial products and service providers. The book's second contribution discusses the wider issue that Islamic finance raises, namely the application of religion-based law in multi-religious societies and in global transactions. The third contribution deals with the interface between law and religion, from the perspective of religion in the wider context of striving for peace and justice, focusing on the economic approach shared by the monotheistic faiths and its application in Jewish law and practice. Finally, the book covers Islamic finance and the financial crisis.

With a full scope of financial services, ranging from banking and capital markets to insurance and microfinance, Islamic finance has now become the most prominent form of faith-based finance in the world. After a period of double digit growth, the global assets of Islamic finance reached USD 2 trillion in 2015. Today more than 300 institutions are engaged in Islamic finance across the world. Despite this success, the field remains poorly understood. Confusion can arise from media condemnation of Islamic extremism and, at the same time, praise for Islamic finance even if both claim allegiance to the same religion. Compounding this confusion is the academic narrative that treats finance as a purely secular subject that has little to do with the ethos and rules of a religion. The complex terminologies, which are mostly rooted in Islam's legal injunctions and historical practices, can render the field even more incomprehensible. This Very Short Introduction demystifies Islamic finance by shedding light on its core principles and practices. Adeel Malik and Usman Hayat cover the main debates surrounding Islamic finance's performance and potential, comparing and contrasting Islamic financial instruments with those of conventional finance, and building connections between Islamic finance and other ethical traditions in finance. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. In this latest installment of his remarkable series of books of alternative science and history, Joseph P. Farrell outlines the consistent pattern and strategy of bankers in ancient and modern times, and their desire to suppress the public development of alternative physics and energy technologies, usurp the money creating and issuing power of the state, and substitute a facsimile of money-as-debt. Here, Farrell peels back the layers of deception to reveal the possible deep physics that the “banksters” have used to aid them in their financial policies. Feral House also published Farrell’s Philosopher’s Stone: Alchemy and the Secret Research for Exotic Matter.
