In the professionalised context of the contemporary architectural profession, precise communications – drawings, specifications, letters, faxes and emails – are charged with the complex task of translating architectural intent into a neutral and quantifiable language which is expected to guarantee an exact match between the architects’ intentions and the constructed result. Yet, as any architectural practitioner will know, it is doubtful whether the construction of any architectural project may ever exactly match all written and drawn predictions. This book challenges claims to certainty which have been attributed to such communications from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, and critiques ongoing expectations of certainty in contemporary architectural production.

Precision, already a promiscuous term, seems now to have been uncoupled from its contract with truthfulness. Meanwhile error, and the always-political space of its dissent, has reconfigured itself. In The Architecture of Error Francesca Hughes argues that behind the architect's acute fetishization of redundant precision lies a special fear of physical error. What if we were to consider the pivotal cultural and technological transformations of modernism to have been driven not so much by the causes its narratives declare, she asks, as by an unspoken horror of loss of control over error, material life, and everything that matter stands for? Hughes traces the rising intolerance of material vagaries -- from the removal of ornament to digitalized fabrication -- that produced the blind rejection of organic materials, the proliferation of material testing, and the rhetorical obstacles that blighted cybernetics. Why is it, she asks, that the more we cornered physical error, the more we feared it? Hughes's analysis of redundant precision exposes an architecture of fear whose politics must be called into question. This thesis develops and establishes several methods to determine the detailed geometric architecture of transiting exoplanetary systems (planets orbiting around, and periodically passing in front of, stars other than the sun) using high-precision photometric data collected by the Kepler space telescope. It highlights the measurement of stellar obliquity – the tilt of the stellar equator with respect to the planetary orbital plane(s) – and presents methods for more precise obliquity measurements in individual systems of particular interest, as well as for measurements in systems that have been out of reach of previous methods. Such information is useful for investigating the dynamical evolution of the planetary orbit, which is the key to understanding the diverse architecture of exoplanetary systems. The thesis also demonstrates a wide range of unique applications of high-precision photometric data, which expand the capability of future space-based photometry.

In the education of an architect, at certain critical junctures, there is a need to withhold language. While passage to non-linguistic representation is at times vexing, the existence of memories and images delays the inevitable appropriation of architecture by language. Holding language in abeyance is necessary in order to wander openly amidst the labyrinth of architecture. This stance is not an indication of the inferiority of language to architecture but rather a question of finding appropriate limits. This act of withholding allows architecture to stand and withstand in the world. In the space of learning an architect constructs a threshold between ambiguity and precision in silence. The act of constructing a mold to cast a spatial form in plaster, or drawing the lineaments bounding impressions of space, is analogous to making a building. These kinds of actions require precise thinking and making. They carry the weight and burden of the delay of language. This very delay makes an architect and architecture possible.

Supercomputers are the largest and fastest computers available at any point in time. The term was used for the first time in the New York World, March 1920, to describe "new statistical machines with the mental power of 100 skilled mathematicians in solving even highly complex algebraic problems. " Invented by Mendenhall and Warren, these machines were used at Columbia University'S Statistical Bureau. Recently, supercomputers have been used primarily to solve large-scale prob lems in science and engineering. The requirements and the large scale often demand a high-precision below the microsecond-range. The IEEE-1588 standard addresses these issues and proposes ways for a suitable implementation. Complementing these solutions, an alternative architecture for network interfaces and networked devices is proposed that renders a worst-case precision in the 100 ns-range possible. Furthermore, an analysis and an experimental evaluation reveals actual values for the worst-case precision that might be achieved.
