Originally designed as a high-altitude interceptor, the P-38 was the first U.S. fighter of WWII to compare with the Spitfire and Me-109. The twin-tailed, single seat "Fork Tailed Devil" carried four .50-caliber machine guns and a 20mm cannon, and could fly at speeds above 400 mph. An extremely successful design, it was the primary long-range fighter for the Army Air Force until the appearance of the P-51 Mustang. Northrop¿s T-38 Talon was the world¿s first supersonic trainer aircraft, and remains in service today in air forces worldwide. It entered service in 1961, and quickly set climb records, earning it the nickname ¿white rocket¿. Nearly 1200 Talons were produced before the last one rolled off the assembly line in 1972. The first P-38s became operational with the 1st Fighter Group in April 1941, and the initial combat deployments were made in Alaska, the Southwest Pacific and North Africa during the latter part of 1942. Photographic reconnaissance versions of the P-38 were in action even sooner when F-4 (P-38E) models were rushed to frontline units a few months after Pearl Harbor. Often using modified field measures to equip aircraft and train pilots in this demanding fighter, early pilots wrote a remarkable record of accomplishments that displayed a high degree of courage and innovation. Every theatre in which the United States was involved saw deployment of the P-38, and more than 60 Lightning pilots were credited with at least five victories by the end of 1943. The P-39 Airacobra was designed by Bell¿s brilliant engineer, Robert Woods. The plane featured a mid-engine design, intended to allow it to carry a lethal 37mm cannon in the nose. An all-metal, low-wing design, the P-39 was the first fighter to feature tricycle landing gear. The plane debuted in 1939, and proved impressive in tests. Yet the aircraft lacked a large fuel capacity that limited range, and pilots learned that its performance dropped off markedly at altitudes above 17,000 feet. Despite this, over 9,500 P-39s were built. Almost half were sent to the USSR, where Soviet pilots, flying low-level attack missions, achieved devastating results. The Corsair was one of WWII¿s most superb fighters, achieving a victory ratio of nearly 11:1 in the Pacific. Had things worked out differently, its sister craft, Goodyear¿s F2G ¿Super¿ Corsair, might have eclipsed that record. Based on Goodyear¿s fixed-wing F1G design, the F2G had a bubble cockpit and was fitted with a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 engine. The twenty-eight cylinder, four row radial air-cooled monster provided nearly 50% more take-off power than the standard double Wasp. Yet by the close of WWII, only five F2G¿s had been built, and so the plane never saw combat.
