Geographic data models are digital frameworks that describe the location and characteristics of things in the world around us. With a geographic information system, we can use these models as lenses to see, interpret, and analyze the infinite complexity of our natural and man-made environments. With the geodatabase, a new geographic data model introduced with ArcInfo 8, you can extend significantly the level of detail and range of accuracy with which you can model geographic reality in a database environment.

This book offers a rational and philosophical approach to environmental interpretation, the educational purpose of which is particularly relevant in an age when specialization tends to distance most people from direct experience of the way the environment works. In reviewing the practice of interpretation, the author emphasises that effective work in this field must be finely tuned. The interpreter must constantly bear in mind the real value and significance of the features interpreted and the needs of the visitors to whom interpretation is addressed.

WJTOW suggests that we might be better off paying less attention to Jesus' Second Coming and more to his sense of irony and his outrage with religious bigotry. The questions people need to ask about this "man of Nazareth" have a lot to do with recognizing how different our world is from the one Jesus was born into and understood so intimately. It's probably true that the 21st century world, with all of its problems and troubles, is a much better world than the first century middle east that Jesus knew, and we shouldn't be ashamed to come to Jesus with all this package of Darwin and Einstein, Hubble telescopes and Mars landers, medical miracles and quantum physics. Our modern souls are, after all, all we have to give to him. This book looks at a handful of questions that thoughtful Christians have raised with the author (and a couple of his own) in more than 50 years in serving parishes in the US and Canada. The author takes a common sense approach to these issues and assumes that Jesus knew what he has talking about. Moreover, it still makes sense even in a modern, space-age setting.

A groundbreaking exploration of the remarkable women in Native American communities. Too often ignored or underemphasized in favor of their male warrior counterparts, Native American women have played a more central role in guiding their nations than has ever been understood. Many Native communities were, in fact, organized around women's labor, the sanctity of mothers, and the wisdom of female elders. In this well-researched and deeply felt account of the Ojibwe of Lake Superior and the Mississippi River, Brenda J. Child details the ways in which women have shaped Native American life from the days of early trade with Europeans through the reservation era and beyond. The latest volume in the Penguin Library of American Indian History, Holding Our World Together illuminates the lives of women such as Madeleine Cadotte, who became a powerful mediator between her people and European fur traders, and Gertrude Buckanaga, whose postwar community activism in Minneapolis helped bring many Indian families out of poverty. Drawing on these stories and others, Child offers a powerful tribute to the many courageous women who sustained Native communities through the darkest challenges of the last three centuries.

In this fascinating book, Chris Abbott, a leading political analyst, takes a close look at 21 key speeches which have shaped the world today. He examines the power of the arguments embedded in these speeches to inspire people to achieve great things, or do great harm. Abbott draws upon his political expertise to explain how our current understanding of the world is rooted in pivotal moments of history. These moments are captured in the words of a range of influential speakers including: Emmeline Pankhurst, Martin Luther King, Jr, Enoch Powell, Napoleon Beazley, Kevin Rudd, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Osama bin Laden, Margaret Beckett, Winston Churchill, Salvador Allende, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Tim Collins, Mohandas Gandhi, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Robin Cook and Barack Obama. The speeches in this book are arranged thematically, linked by concepts such as 'might is right', 'with us or against us' and 'give peace a chance'. Each transcript is accompanied by an insightful commentary that analyses how the words relate to our modern society. Fresh and relevant, this is a book that will make you stop in your tracks and think about what is really happening in the world today.

Wonder and Education

Why would a deeper, more integrative and holistic understanding of our world – of our social and economic order and its dependence on the ecosystems of our planet – make people incapable of maintaining our society?

Many people, whether educators or not, will agree that an education that does not inspire wonder is barren. Wonder is commonly perceived as akin to curiosity, as stimulating inquiry, and as something that enhances pleasure in learning, but there are many experiences of wonder that do not have an obvious place in education. In Wonder and Education, Anders Schinkel theorises a kind of wonder with less obvious yet fundamental educational importance which he calls 'contemplative wonder'. Contemplative wonder disrupts frameworks of understanding that are taken for granted and perceived as natural and draws our attention to the world behind our constructions, sparking our interest in the world as something worth attending to for its own sake rather than for our purposes. It opens up space for the consideration of (radical) alternatives wherever it occurs, and in many cases is linked with deep experiences of value; therefore, it is not just important for education in general, but also, more specifically, for moral and political education.
