A detailed memoir of the life and career of a WWII veteran and POW. George Sweanor was sent, along with fellow Allied Air Forces prisoners of war, to what he considers his Alma Mater, Stalag Luft III, Sagan, Silesia, Germany, after his Halifax bomber was shot down on the return leg from Berlin in March of 1943. The prisoner-of-war camp, famous for The Great Escape, was run by the German Luftwaffe (air force), and through their mutual respect for their profession the captors and their prisoners generally got along well. This afforded George the opportunity to carefully record the events of his imprisonment, and instilled in him the duty and desire to capture his 25 years of military service in this book. This memoir is an account of 25 years spent in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as an observer (navigator, bomb aimer, gunner) during World War II, his marrying in England, his capture and imprisonment, assisting The Great Escape, returning to Canada after the war, supporting a military family of five girls, and serving in various exciting assignments that included years of pioneering work in the Arctic, the Korean Airlift, training NATO cadets (having as a pilot trainee in 1957 the high-school Luftwaffe flak gunner responsible for shooting him down in 1943), and terminating in November 1966 in the Combat Operations Center at NORAD, Colorado Springs, during the Vietnam War era. Additionally, this book includes rich statistics from World War II operations, diagrams, maps, pictures, cartoons, and a bit of humorous wit to temper the sorrows of war.

From one of the greatest literary critics of the twentieth century, this installment of Edmund Wilson’s private notebooks covers the years of the 1940s, providing a rich lens into the writer’s life and the world at large. Wilson turned forty-five in 1940, and this volume The Forties: From Notebooks & Diaries of the Period shows the extent to which he was reappraising his life in the decade to follow - saying goodbye to the drifting of the 1920s and the Marxism of the 1930s. Published posthumously and edited by Leon Edel, The Forties includes observations on his increasingly complicated family matters and covers appreciatively writers like Andre Malraux, W. H. Auden, and Max Beerbohm, as well as entries from his research and travels. "We can see the beginnings of the masterly work of Wilson's later years, the studies of the American literary and mythic past on which his reputation will surely rest." Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post on The Forties

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned - from the layout of the winding roads, to the colours of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than just tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. Taken decade by decade, Derek Jarman's life is a virtual encapsulation of the social and cultural history of the latter half of the twentieth century, from post-war austerity through the liberated sixties and the perplexing seventies to the eighties of Aids and Thatcherism. Always influential in artistic and film-making terms, and within the gay community, Jarman had attained before his death a figurehead status that is now very generally recognised, and can only increase with time. His extraordinary garden in Dungeness in Kent has become a major tourist attraction and his films still compel massive critical attention. Tony Peake was Derek Jarman's literary agent, and knew him well. His authorised biography is based on first-hand interviews and primary research and does immense justice to a brilliant - and singular - subject.

The year before he died, in what was one of the most difficult yet prolific periods of his life, Paul Klee created some of his most surprising and innovative works. In 1939, the year before his death from a long illness and against a backdrop of sociopolitical turmoil and the outbreak of World War II, Klee worked with a vigor and inventiveness that rivaled even the most productive periods of his youth. This book illuminates the artist’s response to his personal difficulties and the era’s broader realities through imagery that is tirelessly inventive—by turns political, solemn, playful, humorous, and poetic. The works featured testify to Klee’s restless drive to experiment with form and material. His use of adhesive, grease, oil, chalk, and watercolor, among other media, resulted in surfaces that are not only visually striking, but also highly tactile and original. Not unlike a diary, the drawings are often meditative reflections on the pains and pleasures of life—their titles, among them Monsters in readiness and Struggles with himself, signal Klee’s frame of mind. Renowned art historian Dawn Ades looks at this group of paintings and drawings in the context of their time and as indicative of a pivotal moment in art history. Moved by this late period of Klee’s oeuvre, American artist Richard Tuttle responds to specific works in the form of dialogical poems. This stunning publication highlights the novelty and ingenuity of Klee’s late works, which deeply affected the generation of artists—including Anni Albers, Jean Dubuffet, Mark Tobey, and Zao Wou-Ki—that emerged after World War II and continues to captivate artists and viewers alike today
