Evaluates 150 major examples of serious literature, both fiction and nonfiction, published during the previous calendar year. The philosophy behind our selection process is to cover works that are likely to be of interest to general readers, that represent the major literary genres, that reflect publishing trends, that are written by authors being taught in literature programs, and that will stand the test of time. By filtering the thousands of books published every year down to 150 notable titles, the editors have provided the busy librarian with an excellent reader's advisory tool and patrons with fodder for book discussion groups and a guide for choosing worthwhile reading material. The essay-reviews in the Annual provide a more academic, "authoritative" review of a work than is typically found in newspapers and other ephemeral sources. The reviews in the two-volume Magill's Literary Annual, 2020 are arranged alphabetically by title. At the beginning of both volumes is a complete alphabetical list, by category, of all covered books that provides readers with the title, author, and a brief description of each work. Every essay is approximately four pages in length. The text of each essay-review analyzes and presents the focus, intent, and relative success of the author, as well as the makeup and point of view of the work under discussion. - Publisher.

My motto is: “Instead of harming ourselves and our children with opium and other drugs, alcohol, sex, guns and hatred, malice and racism, we as Blacks and Whites, Latinx and Asians and Indians and all in between need to manage disappointment, poverty, and living with stress to the extent that our choices allow us to leverage intelligence and energy in order to produce and create a level beyond “good enough” to outstanding. A parent or guardian’s responsibility as caregiver to their children’s mental, physical and moral development provides an impetus to make the world in which their children live be a better place to live. We must help our new generations make a clear path for the future and make the future a reality, creating a time in which our current struggles are nothing more than a distant memory. A moral voice must be available to all Americans as we make a concerted effort to value and respect and love all our Creators creatures -great or small.

Twenty-five years ago, Ilan Stavans published his first book, Imagining Columbus: The Literary Voyage (1993). Since then, Stavans has become a polarizing figure, dismissed and praised in equal measure, a commanding if contested intellectual whose work as a cultural critic has been influential in the fields of Latino and Jewish studies, politics, immigration, religion, language, and identity. He can be credited for bringing attention to Jewish Latin America and issues like Spanglish, he has been instrumental in shaping a certain view of Latino Studies in universities across the United States as well abroad, he has anthologized much of Latino and Latin American Jewish literature and he has engaged in contemporary pop culture via the graphic novel. He was the host of a PBS show called Conversations with Ilan Stavans, and has had his fiction adapted into the stage and the big screen. The man, as one critic stated, clearly has energy to burn and it does not appear to be abating. This collection celebrates twenty-five years of Stavans’s work with essays that describe the good and the bad, the inspired and the pedestrian, the worthwhile and the questionable.
