After many years of researching, studying and learning about simple everyday life situations we go through and listening to others, I finally made it to the point where I’m able to share a more personal look inside of my life and the lives of everyday normal people. As you read, “A Part Of Me, You & Us”, you’ll see life is not always a bed of roses as some would have You to believe, but it is a blessing. As I open up and expose a part of who I really am; a part I’ve kept hidden or at least I thought it was hidden; a part of Me that now wants to speak on its own terms. I realized my blessing isn’t just for Me, it’s also for those who God has brought and will bring into my life to assist Me in their own unique way and share their own stories. You’re going to read about some of the events that have helped Us get to this point in our lives. This is a look inside the minds of a few people who are willing to share their stories with the intent of helping others who may be on similar journeys. These are stories about Me, You and things we did together. That’s how Me and You became US and how our stories came into existence. So, here’s the next step to finding out who we really are and the journeys that got Us here. I hope when You read my book it enlightens your journey. Enjoy!

Yo, this is Hal the Caveman coming at you. I lived 5 million years ago in what's now known as Chicken Bend, Arkansas. As a hobby, I drew pictures on the walls of my cave, showing what life was like back in the day. Then some egghead spotted my artwork and found a way to translate it into modern English. Thrill as I describe how dinosaurs used my relatives as throw pillows! Read with awe as I reveal the importance of not ending up as part of a velociraptor turd! Share the joy as I relate how we accidentally invented the missionary position when Tamuk tripped over a tree root and fell on top of his cousin, Twin Moons. See how caveman really felt about: • Family Life: "Kids and food. . .it's important to know the difference." • Clothing: "Sometimes back hair just isn't enough." • Fighting: "Like rugby with spears." And for all you aspiring Fred Flinstones, I'll be offering up some modern-day wisdom, like redoing your apartment, Miocene-era style, and hosting your own caveman-themed barbeques and weekend retreats. Annotation "The editors have brought together a range of eminent contributors who present a range of issues throughout the life cycle. The book asserts that it hopes to 'assist readers to anticipate change and discontinuity in people's lives and think about strategies to support them' through the many challenges that they may face in their lives. In my view this book certainly does that and the editors and contributors are to be congratulated on the production of a relevant and contemporary text that I have no hesitation in both endorsing and recommending to all involved in supporting and or caring for people with learning disabilities."Professor Bob Gates, Project Leader - Learning Disabilities Workforce Development, NHS Education South Central, UK"The editors have gathered an authoritative faculty to present and discuss a range of contemporary issues; both practical and ethical. The text is well grounded in the lived experience of people with disability and draws on the evidence-base of contemporary science. Each chapter includes thought provoking exercises. This is a seminal text for students and practitioners, researchers and policy makers."Associate Professor Keith R. McVilly, Deakin University, Australia"I currently own a copy of the first edition and it has proved an invaluable resource time and time again. There is not an essay I complete that does not make reference to the book and I can consistently use it to reflect back on my practice as a student nurse and social worker. Having read several extracts from the new edition it does appear to include very high quality content covering learning disabilities over the lifespan ... if I were to personally recommend any book for budding or current learning disability professionals then this would be it."James Grainger, Student Nurse/Social Worker, Sheffield Hallam University, UK"I like the way it has primary and secondary information from a range of sources. The exercises in the book also get you to think about the situation in question which helps us think about our values and anti-oppressive practice ... This book really does start with the basics and having a learning disability from birth and the effects, to in depth knowledge and literature ... This book would be very helpful to me as it brings in literature policies and models from both a health and social side, which is important for my course and collaborative working."Laura Jean Lowe, Student Nurse, Sheffield Hallam University, UK"It is written with a clearly conveyed in-depth knowledge and in a way that has professional lived experience within the context of the work. The authors have taken into account the emotional, client-centred approach to the modern practitioner's practice ... The book gives a true wealth of good practice scenarios that can only help practitioners be good at what they do and aspire to be."Lee Marshall, Student Nurse, Sheffield Hallam University, UKWith its spread of chapters covering key issues across the life cycle this text has established itself as the foundational primer for those studying the lived experiences of people with learning disabilities and their families, and outcomes achieved through services and support systems.Recognising learning disability as a lifelong disability, this accessible book is structured around the life cycle. The second edition is refreshed and expanded to include seven new chapters, covering:AetiologyBreaking news (about disability) and early interventionTransition to adulthoodThe sexual lives of womenEmploymentPersonalisationPeople with hidden identitiesWith contributions from respected figures from a range of disciplines, the book draws heavily upon multidisciplinary perspectives and is based on the latest research and evidence for practice. The text is informed by medical, social and legal models of learning disability, exploring how "learning disability" is produced, reproduced and understood.Extensive use is made of real-life case studies, designed to bring theory, values, policy and practice to life. Narrative chapters describe, in the words of people with learning disabilities themselves, their lives and aspirations. They helpfully show readers the kinds of roles played by families, advocates and services in supporting people with learning disabilities. New exercises and questions have been added to encourage discussion and reflection on practice.Learning Disabilityis core reading for students entering health and social care professions to work with people with learning disabilities. It is a compelling reference text for practitioners as it squarely addresses the challenges facing people with learning disability, their loved ones and the people supporting them.ContributorsDawn Adams, Kathryn Almack, Dorothy Atkinson, Nigel Beail, Christine Bigby, Alison Brammer, Jacqui Brewster, Hilary Brown, Jennifer Clegg, Lesley Cogher, Helen Combes, Clare Connors, Bronach Crawley, Eric Emerson, Margaret Flynn, Linda Gething, Dan Goodley, Peter Goward, Gordon Grant, Chris Hatton, Sheila Hollins, Jane Hubert, Kelley Johnson, Gwynnyth Llewellyn, Heather McAlister, Michelle McCarthy, Alex McClimens, Roy McConkey, David McConnell, Keith McKinstrie, Fiona Mackenzie, Ghazala Mir, Ada Montgomery, Lesley Montisci, Elizabeth Murphy, Chris Oliver, Richard Parrott, Paul Ramcharan, Malcolm Richardson, Bronwyn Roberts, Philippa Russell, Kirsten Stalker, Martin Stevens, John Taylor, Irene Tuffrey-Wijne, Sally Twist, Jan Walmsley, Kate Woodcock

‘Throwing Back the Apple’ tells the story of Marian and her love affair with Yair, an Israeli artist: “Tell me your story” Yair asked. That's a bit boring I thought to myself—the story of me. But he insisted and...I suppose I could say something quickly—like give a thumb nail sketch. I could start by saying that I'm English, that I was born to a seventeen-year-old unwed mother in mid January during a snowstorm. My first name, Marian, has no particular significance other than my mother liked it. My middle name, Rachel, was given in honor of her favorite teacher who was Jewish. ‘Throwing Back the Apple’ explores, in a very simple down to earth manner, a new horizon for female/male relationship. Revavah doesn’t offer the reader any New-age gimmicks, no special gadgets, one can shop for; just very simple realizations about Yair, herself and human nature. Marian is introduced to the astonishing simplicity of everything, and the ancient Hebrew frequency; that draws its wisdom from Genesis.

Anorexia tends to be studied within health disciplines, such as medicine, psychoanalysis or psychology. When the condition is discussed in relation to society more broadly, focus is commonly restricted to considerations about the demise of the traditional family meal or the all-pervading obsession with thinness and media representations of ‘size zero’ models. But what can sociology tell us about anorexia and how a person becomes anorexic? This book draws on empirical research – both interviews and observation – conducted in and outside medical settings with anorexic girls, medical staff, teachers and other teenagers of the same age. As such, it offers the first fully sociological treatment of the condition, taking the reader closer to the actual experiences of people living with anorexia. It retraces the behaviours, practices and processes that create what is patterned as an anorexic ‘career’ and reveals the cultural and social characteristics of the people who engage on this path taking them from a simple diet to hospitalization or recovery. Richly illustrated with qualitative research, Becoming Anorexic: A Sociological Approach demonstrates that anorexia can be viewed as a very particular work of self-transformation, which requires specific – and social – ‘dispositions’. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology and anthropology with an interest in health and illness, the body, social class and gender.
