This book provides an overview of the hero journey theme in literature, from antiquity to the present, with a focus on the imagery of the rites of passage in human life (initiation at adolescence, mid-life, and death). This is the only book to focus on the major works of the literary tradition, detailing discussions of the hero journey in major literary texts. Included are chapters on the literature of Antiquity (Sumerian, Egyptian, Biblical, Greek, and Roman), the Middle Ages (with emphasis on the Arthurian Romance), the Renaissance to the Enlightenment (Shakespeare, Milton, Marvell, Pope, Fielding, the Arabian Nights, and Alchemical Illustration), Romanticism and Naturalism (Coleridge, Selected Grimm's Tales, Bront%, Bierce, Whitman, Twain, Hawthorne, E.T.A. Hoffman, Rabindranath Tagore), and Modernism to Contemporary (Joyce, Gilman, Alifa Rifaat, Bellow, Lessing, Pynchon, Eudora Welty).

On the 10th of May 1842, his 25th birthday, the Berlin bookseller Julius Springer opened his own bookstore and at the same time began a career as a publisher. The publishing program was extended over the following generations, and the company expanded to become the most important German scientific publishing house. The author describes this development, mostly using information from the Springer archives. The addition of nearly 400 figures and tables makes this a highly informative document of the history of bookselling, publishing and science. A second volume contains the history of the publishing house from 1945 to 1992.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is commonly seen as the spiritual approach to craniosacral therapy (CST); in fact, BCST as taught by Franklyn Sills, the pioneer in the field, is quite different from conventional CST. Biodynamic work is based on the development of perceptual skills where the practitioner learns to become sensitive to subtle respiratory motions called primary respiration and also to the power of spontaneous healing. Through the Breath of Life, which, Sills asserts, echoes the Holy Spirit in the Judeo-Christian tradition, bodhicitta in Buddhism, and the Tai Chi in Taoism, students of BCST learn to enter a state of presence oriented to the client’s inherent ability to heal. In Foundations in Craniosacral Biodynamics, Sills offers students and practitioners an in-depth, step-by-step guide to the development of perceptual and clinical skills with specific clinical exercises and explorations to help students and practitioners learn the essentials of a biodynamic approach. Individual chapters cover such topics as holism and biodynamics; mid-tide, Long Tide, Dynamic Stillness and stillpoint process; the motility of tissues and the central nervous system; transference and the shadow; shamanistic resonances; and more. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The practice in the art of stewardship is characterized by the results of the transformation of one man who spent the vast majority of his life running away from the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Then one day God reached out and tapped him on the shoulder to say He wanted to speak with him. This initial attempt was met with an uncompromising, "Not now." The second attempt was met with, "I am too busy trying to build a business."There was no third, at least not in the same sense as in the previous two because if there was, the Resilient Prophet would have been readily available, why, because everything he thought he had in life to live, love and work for, was gone, his family, businesses, real estate, vehicles, cash on hand, credit cards, as well as friends and associates had all but literally evaporated overnight. For the third time in his life he had lost everything, however what made this loss that much more devastating was in the fact that he was now absolutely alone and stripped naked of everything that he believed was important in his life and wondering why this had happened again. In his mind he could not make any sense out of how one day he could buy almost anything his heart desired because he had money, social mobility and credibility, and the next, he could not even buy a bus ticket to go and enjoy a free box lunch.
