To address Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for reading and language, today’s educators strive to help their students develop higher-level understanding with challenging materials. In this book, we share our method for implementing an integrated strategy approach for helping readers understand expository text. This approach can be used to accompany and extend text structure instruction on the five most commonly used expository text structures: compare and contrast, cause and effect, problem and solution, description, and sequence. Within this approach, we designed a method for using key vocabulary in a way that helps readers think about the structure of the text. To aid in the development of higher-level understanding with challenging materials, this approach integrates other essential reading comprehension components that foster understanding, such as predicting and summarizing. The Structure Sort integrated approach embeds these essential strategies before, during, and after reading to empower students to make connections and build comprehension at all stages of reading.

Using an approach developed and refined over a combined 44 years of teaching, this book encourages literature teachers at the high school and college levels to empower their students as readers--and meaning-makers--of literature. The book presents results of a research study in which 288 students, ranging from junior high school to graduate school, responded in writing to the same 18-line poem. After an introductory section, the second section of the book presents in full the writings on the poem prepared by a dozen of these students and then examines the students' different approaches to accounting for the general situation of the poem, the particular situation, and the various voices that the students heard in the poem. Reader development focuses on readers rather than reading skills. The purposes of reader development are to enhance the reading experience, to make it a more pleasurable and creative act for the reader; to increase people's confidence in their reading; and to make reading a more communal activity by bringing readers together to share their experiences. The focus of reader development is pleasure reading, which the authors interpret as reading fiction. They observe that public libraries were not at the forefront of this movement, but librarians are responding by changing library culture to focus on readers rather than books. The ways in which librarians responded and additional responses they could undertake are described within the context of the broader social movements in the United Kingdom to promote reader development. Three themes dominate the chapters. First, the authors tirelessly celebrate reading. Reading is good. Reading will make one happy. Reading elevates. The second theme is opportunism. If society is paying attention to reading, librarians should get on board and seize the opportunity to build their status and to secure the place of libraries as critically important institutions. The third theme is social inclusiveness. Librarians should always keep in mind the political dimensions of public library service and assure that all sectors of the populations share in the benefits of library service.
