So you always wanted to write a book, but didn't know where to begin. It's been a while since English class and all you remember is that your verbs and nouns should agree. Didn't learn parts of speech in school? Don't know? What's an adjective? No need to panic. Author and journalist Marsha Jones says no need to panic. Her guide, Do the Writing Thing teaches you how to write through a series of writing prompts, writing samples, exercises, and brings some of the rules to you. Marsha Jones also recommends ways that your writing comes across fresh and what you consider when you are writing to convey your points and your message.

Moral Literacy Or How to Do the Right Thing

"A great resource for beginning ethics courses. The book is short and yet it richly embodies the methods of ethical thinking about practical moral problems that are hard for students to learn unless they see them in action. McGinn perspicuously sets out a small set of basic principles and then attacks the problems of our treatment of animals, abortion, sex, censorship, and so on, with a masterful blend of attention to real-life cases and imaginary thought experiments. McGinn hardly claims to have the last word on the complex issues he discusses, and students will find many exciting problems and points to take up." --Owen Flanagan, Duke University

'Clever and original' The Sunday Mirror She looked up into her husband's amber eyes and, smiling lazily, pulled his face against hers and kissed him with a passion. And that really should be the end of the story, but it's only the beginning. Like Rama and Sita, the mythical lovers of Indian history, Chita and Shyam have set themselves the ideals of fidelity, faith and family. But, it must be said, Rama and Sita didn't live in a Docklands loft in 21st century London. When the monsters of management consultancy rear their ugly heads, Chita fights to resist a new-found lust for money and her devilish but utterly beguiling boss Sam. A difficult battle when Sam is piling her with expensive jewellery whilst her husband Shyam is being sulky and righteous at home. But when does it become too late to do the right thing? A modern fairytale with a delightfully Bollywood twist, DO THE RIGHT THING is an uplifting, feel-good tale perfect for fans of Dawn O'Porter and Marian Keyes. Like Mooki, the hero of Spike Lee's film "Do the Right Thing," artificially intelligent systems have a hard time knowing what to do in all circumstances. Classical theories of perfect rationality prescribe the "right thing" for any occasion, but no finite agent can compute their prescriptions fast enough. In Do the Right Thing, the authors argue that a new theoretical foundation for artificial intelligence can be constructed in which rationality is a property of "programs" within a finite architecture, and their behavior over time in the task environment, rather than a property of individual decisions. Do the Right Thing suggests that the rich structure that seems to be exhibited by humans, and ought to be exhibited by AI systems, is a necessary result of the pressure for optimal behavior operating within a system of strictly limited resources. It provides an outline for the design of new intelligent systems and describes theoretical and practical tools for bringing about intelligent behavior in finite machines. The tools are applied to game planning and realtime problem solving, with surprising results.

In January 1865, President Abraham Lincoln approved Executive Order, Special Field Orders Number 15. It was an order carried out by the military to divide 400,000 acres of land or confiscated plantations into forty-acre parcels and give them to the heads of the former slave family. I am sure we have all heard of 40 acres and a mule. In April of 1865, President Lincoln was assassinated (only three months later). Vice President Andrew Johnson was sworn in and did not honor that executive order. Special Field Orders Number 15 was reparations for the recently freed slaves America had held in servitude and subjugation for over 200 years. This book spells out the justification, the ability to pay, and an actual plan to execute reparations for the children of American slaves.

"This book is for all those who are seeking a human perspective on economic and organizational processes. It lays the foundations for a value based approach to the economy. The key questions are: "What is important to you or your organization?" "What is this action or that organization good for?" The book is directed at the prevalence of instrumentalist thinking in the current economy and responds to the calls for another economy. Another economy demands another economics. The value based approach is another economics; it focuses on values and on the most important goods such as families, homes, communities, knowledge, and art. It places economic processes in their cultural context. What does it take to do the right thing, as a person, as an organization, as a society? What is the good to strive for? This book gives directions for the answers. The value based approach restores the ancient idea that quality of life and of society is what the economy is all about. It advocates shifting thefocus from quantities ("how much?") to qualities ("what is important?").

We should all have a right standing with God, which means that we should have his righteousness as Christians. I know that in this world it is a difficult situation and a challenge each day to do the right thing for God because of where you may be, like work, church, school, or even at home when you have friends over. As Christians, doing what is right in the eyes of God is done all the time no matter where we are. Doing it God's way is the best way to doing things, and we would be blessed when we do it. As real Christians or children of the Most High God, we are to do the right thing, and we would be able to see and feel that it is the right thing to do, to help others that are in need, help people to see the truth, to read his Word, showing all that we are walking in his light and staying out of the dark of this world. The earthly life of Jesus is described as being led or filled with the Holy Spirit. We also must do as he did. God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life. Find your relationship with God. Learn how to do what is right by following Jesus Christ in all that he did. Learn from his truth, learn to hear his voice. Know his spiritual principles. Believe in God, and he will.

Who controls today’s conversation about what education should be in the classroom? Bill Gates? Arne Duncan? Michelle Rhee? Media? Politiicans? Who has gained more and more control of what actually goes on in the classroom? Bill Gates? Arne Duncan? Michelle Rhee? Media? Polticians? Why? Where are the voices of the thousands of talented and loved teachers whose classrooms should be models of what works regardless of the socioeconomic environment they are located. I am but one of many. Each of us has gotten to be who we are as teachers through our own set of circumstances. We, like all other professionals learn our craft through our experiences as well as our academic preparation. Some of us get to pass on what we have learned about our craft by becoming supervisors, mentors, or university lecturers. I have mentored new teachers. I have taught a graduate education class. But those endeavors have reached relatively few. I have even spawned new teachers, inspired by me, but those are even fewer. Initially it is why started writing this book. Much of it started as advice to give to my mentees. Then some suggested to me to write a book. So I did!

The "Do the Write Thing" program challenges students to reduce violence and its impact on their lives. All across America, students are rising to the challenge of doing something to end youth violence. The Do the Write Thing Challenge gives middle school students an opportunity to examine the impact of youth violence on their lives. Through classroom discussions and writings, students communicate what they think should be done to reduce youth violence. In addition, they make personal commitments to do something about this problem. By emphasizing personal responsibility, the DtWT Challenge also educates adults about the causes of youth violence. Local community groups promote the program at the grassroots level so that teachers, school administrators, parents, coaches, and young people can bring youth violence into the open, where it can be examined and talked about in a constructive way. When students accept the Challenge, they become messengers for their own thoughts and ideas, which are ultimately more powerful than violence. We say to students, "Accept the Do the Write Thing Challenge. Who knows where it will lead?" In this case of the students highlighted within these pages, their commitment has lead to publication of their moving essays, poems, short stories, and plays. We present to you the writings of the 2015 Do the Write Thing's National Ambassadors, who hail from all across America: from Miami to Los Angeles; Houston to Boston; Utah, Montana, and New York; from Chicago to Atlanta; and many cities and communities in between.
