Dwyer's book is unique and distinctive as it presents and discusses a modern conceptualisation of critical thinking - one that is commensurate with the exponential increase in the annual output of knowledge. The abilities of navigating new knowledge outputs, engaging in enquiry and constructively solving problems are not only important in academic contexts, but are also essential life skills. Specifically, the book provides a modern, detailed, accessible and integrative model of critical thinking that accounts for critical thinking sub-skills and real-world applications, and is commensurate with the standards of twenty-first century knowledge. It also provides both opportunities to learn and apply these skills through a series of exercises, as well as guidelines on how critical thinking can be developed and practised, in light of existing psychological research, which can be used to enhance the experience of critical thinking training and facilitate gains in critical thinking ability.

Learn to Think Critically and Make Better Decisions Addiction professionals make decisions everyday that impact peoples lives. Sometimes these decisions are solid, and sometimes they are the result of flawed thinking, which often results from myths and generalizations that are perpetuated in the field. Thinking flaws are common not just in counselors, but in supervisors, administrators, and presenters, and can lead to potentially negative outcomes both for clients and for programs. In this easy-to-read guide--the first to bring together critical thinking and addiction work--critical thinking expert and addiction professional Dr. Michael J. Taleff offers readers the tools they need to think critically and make better decisions. Readers learn: To evaluate their critical thinking abilities The characteristics of a critical thinking professional What drives bad thinking in addiction work How to recognize and avoid thinking fallacies The ethics and consequences of using critical thinking "Dr. Taleff has provided an insightful analysis of the kinds of thinking errors often made by counselors. The text should be required reading in all areas of health and human services. The concepts and discussion are as valuable to experienced helpers as they are to novices." -Gregory Blevins, Ph.D., Professor, Governors State University

Research in Psychotherapy is a comprehensive synthesis and assessment of the psychotherapeutic research literature for the use of both researchers and those in clinical practice. It is designed as a general reference work, an instruction guide, and a source of information about specific aspects and problems of research. The book consists of three parts. Part 1 discusses principles and methods of research as they are applied to psychotherapy. It provides general background material and principles to help non-researchers appreciate some of the important problems that are encountered. In Part 2, existing research on the effects of psychotherapy and the determinants and correlates of outcome are clustered and reviewed. Chapters 4 to 7 are concerned strictly with a review and appraisal of controlled studies that were designed to evaluate the effects of psychotherapy. Chapters 8 to 13 deal with a large body of research on various factors associated with therapeutic outcome--method, style, and technique variables; patient, therapist, and time variables. Part 3 is concerned with research on aspects of the therapeutic process and on the effect of many of these same variables on the therapeutic interchange as distinct from the outcome of therapy. Also discussed is research on various therapeutic phenomena and conditions about which so much has been written and so little really known. Research in Psychotherapy was written in the conviction that clinical practice should be influenced by research and that rigorous research that meets acceptable experimental standards can be done on the field of psychotherapy. Julian Meltzoff is a fellow of the Division of Clinical Psychology of the American Psychological Association. Known as an innovator of therapeutic programs, he designed and organized a model milieu therapy setting, which was evaluated in his book The Day Treatment Center: Principles, Application, and Evaluation. He also wrote Critical Thinking About Research: Psychology and Related Fields. Melvin Kornreich is supervisor of research in the Psychology Section of the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Brooklyn, New York. A diplomate in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology, Kornreich has had extensive experience in clinical work and research supervision; he teaches in the psychology program of Brooklyn College, City University of New York.

The only book available dedicated to the theory and practice of replication research in Second Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics. A replication study repeats a previous study to discover if its findings are reliable and/or can be generalised to other circumstances. This edited volume brings together a number of experts who argue in favour of a more central role for replication research in Second Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics. The book provides a theoretical argument to support this view, as well as practical examples and model replication studies. It includes advice on how best to set up and execute replication research, and how to write up the findings for presentation to a journal. A paperback version is available separately.
