An intellectual and cultural history of mid-twentieth century plans for European integration, this book calls into question the usual pre- and post-war periodizations that have structured approaches to twentieth-century European history. It focuses not simply on the ideas of leading politicians but analyses debates about Europe in "civil society" and the party-political sphere in Germany, asking if, and how, a "permissive consensus" was formed around the issue of integration. Taking Germany as its case study, the book offers context to the post-war debates, analysing the continuities that existed between interwar and post-war plans for European integration. It draws attention to the abiding scepticism of democracy displayed by many advocates of integration, indeed suggesting that groups across the ideological spectrum converged around support for European integration as a way of constraining the practice of democracy within nation-states.

Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow provides a compelling analysis of the forces and choices that have shaped the trend toward the resegregation of public schools. By assembling a wide range of contributors—historians, sociologists, economists, and education scholars—the editors provide a comprehensive view of a community’s experience with desegregation and economic development. Here we see resegregation through the lens of Charlotte, North Carolina, once a national model of successful desegregation, and home of the landmark Swann desegregation case, which gave rise to school busing. This book recounts the last forty years of Charlotte’s desegregation and resegregation, putting education reform in political and economic context. Within a decade of the Swanncase, the district had developed one of the nation’s most successful desegregation plans, measured by racial balance and improved academic outcomes for both black and white students. However, beginning in the 1990s, this plan was gradually dismantled. Today, the level of resegregation in Charlotte has almost returned to what it was prior to 1971. At the core of Charlotte’s story is the relationship between social structure and human agency, with an emphasis on how yesterday’s decisions and actions define today’s choices.

This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. This is the first systematic and comprehensive study of the biblical view of time and history as it occurs in the Old Testament. The author specifically focuses on the use and function of certain formal expressions involving the Hebrew word yom, 'day'. The first chapter formally surveys the use of yom in the Old Testament. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 investigate, respectively, The Day Past, The Day Present, and The Day Future. They discuss, first, the various genres of historical narration: legend, saga, annals, etc,; second, various kinds of discourse in which the meaning of 'today' is spoken about; and third, the prophetic and apocalyptic genres, in which the future is being defined from the present point of view.

Swiss-German theologian Kung planned this massive synthesis of Christian history and systematic theology as a sequel to his On Being Christian (1976) and as a companion to Judaism (Crossroad, 1992). Ever the Catholic Church's "faithful critic," Kung displays a dazzling breadth of scholarship. Professor of ecumenical theology at the University of Tubingen, he bases his approach on five historical paradigm shifts: Jewish apocalyptic Christianity, early church ecumenism, the Roman system in the medieval papal church, the Reformation, and modern democracy. He notes dominant influences in each, presenting his convictions on the essence of Christianity and moving toward a polycentrism where Orthodox, Catholic, and evangelical traditions are not mutually exclusive. Over 30 diagrams and many stimulating "questions for the future" sidebars are included. Not all readers will accept the views of this Vatican II peritus (nor did the Vatican in 1973). But the work is a remarkable achievement for a church always in need of reform and reformers. Recommended for all theology collections

"In Yesterday's Tomorrow, Adamczak responds to right-wing criticism in English of her first book, Communism for Kids, and critiques tendencies on the left to sidestep the dark history and the path that Communism ended up taking. She takes the reader through a series of 8 turning-points in the betrayal of communism, moving in reverse chronological order, from when the Soviet Russians deported anti-Fascists to Nazi Germany in 1939, and moving backwards from there: from the Terror of 1937-39 to the failure of the Left in Central Europe to stop the advent of National Socialism to Stalin's rise to power to Kronstadt. The essential question she asks here is: where did it all go wrong, and digs through one traumatic event after another, digging backward in an attempt to recover some reason for hope that can be utilized toward a future"--
