Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Mary Ashley Townsend was a novelist, newspaper columnist, and poet laureate of New Orleans who made several trips to Mexico with her daughter Cora during the last two decades of the 19th century. She collected her impressions of many aspects of life in that country—flora, fauna, architecture, people at work and play, fashion, society, food—and wrote about them during a time when few women engaged in solo travel, much less the pursuit of travel writing. Her collected work was still in progress when she died in a train accident in 1901, and was never published. Renowned Latin Americanist Ralph Lee Woodward Jr. discovered Townsend's manuscript, along with many of the author's personal papers, in the Special Collections division of Tulane University's Howard-Tilton Library. In addition to annotating the text, he has written a critical introduction to the work that provides excellent background information about the author and places the work in its historical and cultural context.Townsend's writing provides an unusual feminine perspective on Mexico as she describes the country during the middle years of the Porfirio Diaz dictatorship, a pivotal time in Mexican history. Though Townsend does not delve heavily into politics her observations of people's lives provide a valuable source for social historians of the period. Here and There in Mexico will make new contribution to the field of Latin American studies and to the travel literature genre, both as a primary source for historians and as a well-written account of a southern woman's impressions of Mexico during a crucial period in that country's development.

This engrossing book presents the photographs of four historically engaged artists and explains what they reveal about the highly dramatic revolutionary and post-revolutionary period in Mexico from 1910 to 1935. The works of these photographers—American Walter H. Horne, Italian Tina Modotti, and Mexicans Agustín Víctor Casasola and Manuel Álvarez Bravo—are discussed not just as windows onto events but as artworks that offer both objective reporting and stylized expression. The twenty-five years covered in the book encompass some of the most convulsive developments in Mexico, from the violence and cataclysmic changes wrought by the Mexican Revolution to the immense struggles to forge a new nation and a new government. During this period, the work of the four photographers—two primarily documentary, one propagandistic, and one artistic and personal—enabled Mexicans to understand the forces that had brought their nation to armed conflict and social transformation.

Group f.64 is perhaps the most famous movement in the history of photography, counting among its members Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange, Willard Van Dyke, and Edward Weston. Revolutionary in their day, Group f.64 was one of the first modern art movements equally defined by women. From the San Francisco Bay Area, its influence extended internationally, contributing significantly to the recognition of photography as a fine art. The group-first identified as such in a 1932 exhibition-was comprised of strongly individualist artists, brought together by a common philosophy, and held together in a tangle of dynamic relationships. They shared a conviction that photography must emphasize its unique capabilities-those that distinguished it from other arts-in order to establish the medium's identity. Their name, f.64, they took from a very small lens aperture used with their large format cameras, a pinprick that allowed them to capture the greatest possible depth of field in their lustrous, sharply detailed prints. In today's digital world, these “straight” photography champions are increasingly revered. Mary Alinder is uniquely positioned to write this first group biography. A former assistant to Ansel Adams, she knew most of the artists featured. Just as importantly, she understands the art. Featuring fifty photographs by and of its members, Group f.64 details a transformative period in art with narrative flair.

Aims to present remote sensing as it applies to environmental monitoring. It features mineral and petroleum remote-sensing. There is a focus on multispectral applications and digital photogrammetry. Ratio codes and brightness codes are included in an appendix. This has reduced the spectra of minerals to simple, one-digit-per-band codes, helping the user select the best bands or ratios to highlight a mineral. Imaging gases, especially methane, have been included. With the book, students can perform elevation extraction from digitized stereo pairs. Case studies appear throughout the text, allowing students to see how remote-sensing is used in petroleum and mining companies.

A comprehensive, eye-opening history of women's accomplishments in photography that ranges around the world and throughout the entire history of the medium. Women have made vital contributions to photography both as a profession and as an art form from the very beginning. In every aspect of the medium--portraiture, social and scientific documentation, advertising, photojournalism, personal expression--women have been highly visible creators. Yet their achievements have often been overlooked. In A History of Women Photographers, Dr. Naomi Rosenblum--author of the standard reference A World History of Photography--documents the work of women photographers from Julia Margaret Cameron to Margaret Bourke-White, Tina Modotti, and Cindy Sherman. Her ground-breaking work provides an invitingly readable chronicle both of the women's creativity and of the challenging contexts within which they worked. Complementing the illuminating text and remarkable photographs are densely detailed biographies and an extensive annotated bibliography, all of which have made A History of Women Photographers an invaluable resource. For this new edition, eighteen images have been added, and the final three chapters, biographies, and bibliography have been updated and expanded. Dr. Naomi Rosenblum, who lives in Long Island City, New York, is the author of A World History of Photography, now in its third edition. 314 illustrations
