A textbook your students will want to read. "If you would like students to understand hard political concepts, this work makes it accessible for them. By using pop culture, we can open ideological ideas and students are not bound by their own preconceived ideas." —Leah Murray, Weber State University A Novel Approach to Politics turns the conventional textbook wisdom on its head by using pop culture references to illustrate key concepts and cover recent political events. Adopters of previous editions are thanking author Douglas A. Van Belle for some of their best student evaluations to date. With this Sixth Edition, Van Belle brings the book fully up-to-date with current events and policy debates, international happenings, and other assorted ‘intergalactic’ matters. Van Belle tackles the most tumultuous political periods in recent history head-on, encouraging students to engage with ideas, arguments, and information that makes them uncomfortable. Employing a wide range of references from Brooklyn Nine-Nine to The Good Place to Ready Player One, students are given a solid grounding in institutions, ideology, and economics. To keep things grounded, the textbook nuts and bolts are still there to aid students, including chapter objectives, chapter summaries, bolded key terms, and discussion questions.

Whether you might occasionally do an investigation, do investigations frequently, or provide counsel or manage people who do investigations, this book is useful for all levels of expertise. It provides information and a perspective that can help you get started with your first investigation or improve upon your existing knowledge and experience if you have conducted investigations before. The book provides practical examples and illustrations consistent with a risk management approach that goes beyond typical risk-aversion to understanding and managing risk. The book also emphasizes critical thinking and systems thinking as core principles. These principles drive the focus through the immediate impacts and prompt you to consider the secondary and tertiary impacts of your actions. Our investigation process model goes beyond a basic checklist for conducting investigations by providing an integrated process. This process is better suited to handle the real-life situations that require prioritizing, scheduling, and judgment than a simple checklist, particularly on the most challenging days. This book has four main chapters, aligned with the four phases of the process model. Each chapter begins with a story illustrating several investigations in an organization, followed by a discussion of each step in the phase, with details, recommendations, and concerns to consider. The new, proven investigation process model emphasizes critical thinking, systems approach, and risk-management. The story illustrates some of the complexities and realities we face with investigations, followed by details, recommendations, concerns, and examples. "In my 25+ years of conducting workplace investigations, this is the best, comprehensive, awesome systematic approach I have seen. I am excited to recommend to all HR professionals." -- Lori Engel, President/CEO at Ultimate HR - Ultimate Challenge "Finally, a book on workplace investigations you'll WANT to read. Max and Christine figured out how to write an engaging book on what is often a legalistic (and boring) topic. Instead this book tells the story of a dramatic week in the life of an HR department while introducing a terrific model for investigating workplace incidents. They combine realistic examples of investigations (including common mistakes investigators make) with practical advice and tools for doing a solid investigation. Up-to-date, practical and entertaining. Highly recommended!" -- Phillip Wilson: Author, Speaker, and Labor Relations Expert at Labor Relations Institute and Approachable Leadership "A juxtaposition of investigative techniques and relatable illustrations that should help any manager or HR professional evaluate and hone their skills. Following Michelle through several investigations step by step is exciting! The multiple investigations allow you to see the whole process and how the different stages apply depending on the situation. You can easily insert yourself into the story and visualize what steps you would take. It is extremely practical and helpful to see the instruction and explanation used as a commentary on a given investigation example. A must read!" -- Anna Morrison: HR professional and former business owner "As a 'beginner' investigator without much practice, this book is a perfect resource to help me conduct a complete and fair investigation." -- Tiffany Gamblin: HR professional

True reality exists, despite every culture distorting it. All people arrive at some biased view of reality via the story in which and by which they live. Unfortunately the ultimate story of reality as revealed in the Bible is too often presented before the would-be evangelist is adequately aware of the hearer's story. Such an approach is naIve at best and often leads to one of mission's more persistent blights - syncretism. Discover how to transcend these all-to-often drive-by evangelistic efforts and Band-Aid versions of telling the Bible story. Take a Novel Approach. Become aware of the hearers' interpretation of reality that supplies their core assumptions about all of life. In his well-researched and purely authentic discussion Michael Matthews respectfully integrates reality, hermeneutics, story, and missions into a compelling and practical story-based methodology to guide cross-cultural workers through the maze of discovering the particular story and its implications of a host community. The fundamental goal, however, is not simply discovery but ultimately clear communication of the timeless and true Biblical Story within the perceived reality of any community or culture.

As an athlete, family man, and star employee, Pete Leonard had it all. But now the years and years of going along to get along are taking their toll. His second marriage is as shaky as his right hand after a night spent coddling a bottle, his employees think he's a joke, and his boss is just looking for an excuse to show him the door. Can things get any worse? Well, how would you feel if you actually started seeing moose around your office? That's the premise of this new book from acclaimed author Jim Clemmer. This thesis covers the few-cycle laser-driven acceleration of electrons in a laser-generated plasma. This process, known as laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), relies on strongly driven plasma waves for the generation of accelerating gradients in the vicinity of several 100 GV/m, a value four orders of magnitude larger than that attainable by conventional accelerators. This thesis demonstrates that laser pulses with an ultrashort duration of 8 fs and a peak power of 6 TW allow the production of electron energies up to 50 MeV via LWFA. The special properties of laser accelerated electron pulses, namely the ultrashort pulse duration, the high brilliance, and the high charge density, open up new possibilities in many applications of these electron beams.

Understanding of polymer interactions is important for effective processing of plastics and their blends, mixing with nanoparticles, and understanding of their mechanical and physical (e.g., electrical) properties. This book describes a new physics of interactions in polymers that challenges existing theories, and explains the concept of entanglement in a very different way. Rheology is formulated with different parameters defining the physics of dual-phase and cross-dual-phase. The rubbery behavior of thermoplastics is explained quite differently to conventional theory. Rheo-fluidification experiments which are applicable to industry (injection molding, extrusion, sheet forming, etc.) are described and analyzed, including molding under conditions of reduced viscosity (up to several hundred percent). The application of this theory to industry has already been proven by a number of successful derived inventions.

In every language, there are words that can have different meanings in different context. Word Sense Disambiguation is the process of automatically determining the accurate meaning of such a word when used in a sentence. One of the many approaches proposed in the past is Michael Lesk's 1986 algorithm. This algorithm is based on two assumptions. First, words in a given section of text will tend to share a common topic and second, if one sense from each of the two words can be found sharing the same topic, then their dictionary definitions must use some common words. Thus it is possible to disambiguate neighbouring words in a sentence by comparing their definitions and picking those senses whose definitions have the most number of common words. The biggest drawback of this algorithm is that dictionary definitions are often very short and do not have enough words for this algorithm to work well. This book illustrates an approach of dealing with this problem by modifying the algorithm. An attempt towards the exploration of the vast field of Word Sense Disambiguation has also been made.
